I think this is equally common on all motors. it's not as publicized as the 603 issues, but the damage is equally destructive.

Soo what would a bad/dying vacuum pump sound like?

I'm guessing a scraping/popping noise. however, I did not hear anything, but SHOULD have known to park the car, and check out the VP... arrgh.

In the few miles mine went from working to failed to the end of my trip, I never heard anything.
I was lucky the pump died so near my destination. If I'd gone much farther it could've been catastrophic.

Happy Motoring, Mark

How does the vacuum pump failing shred the engine?

Does the vac pump lock up and destroy the timing chain?

Seems like a major design flaw if something as non-essential (to the operation of the engine) as the vacuum pump can take down the engine.

the pump is driven off the face of the injector pump gear, and many large parts are in contact with the gear. if those parts break, they can lodge between the timing chain and the gears, forcing the chain to contact the block, the valve cover, etc. this spacing can throw timing off enough for valves to contact pistons, and contact can shatter the cam... in my case it has shattered the cam gear as well...

First hand experience

I have first hand experience at this:
Broken camshaft: 617 '81 SD. How could this happen?

I was not driving the car, but I fixed the engine and got the car back on the road again. Fortunately, the valves or pistons rarely get damaged, as they are perpendicular to each other. The weak link (pardon the pun) is either the timing chain, gears, or cam. One of these parts will break before lower end damage will occur. Most likely you will only need to replace the broken parts (including the chain), and not have to get into the bottom end. Either way, the IP will need to be timed, as it is probably not in time with the crank gear.

John yours went doing 30mph, mine went doing 65mph+. either way, the engine gets destroyed.
Sorry to hear about your lack of forward motion.

We need a new club. "The Broken Timing Chain Club".

One of the first things I bought for my 603 rebuild was a new Pierburg Vacuum pump. What a lousy thing to have happen.
