The journey of my first Mercedes 1981 300TD
1981 300td 5 cylinder
I just bought this beast yesterday for 500 dollars, I have all info for anything ever done...from its purchase in Idaho to its life in LA, to Charlotte, to under a tree for the last few years. Best I can tell it was driven in 09. 190k miles.. It was a veggie burner, was a purge system, and he always ran good clean oil. I have set up a purge type gas tank in a gatorade bottle, new battery, removed the air cleaner. I was excited to get power..that was a big first step. I turned the switch on the glow light stays on for 5 seconds... Turns over.........nothing more.... I have checked voltage to the glow relay, and the ohms for each glow seem all out of wack according to my meter and what Diesel giant says they should be... I just removed the injector lines and in order made sure they are getting fuel....they are.. One of the glow lines were loose, I tightened it... Turned on switch and let stay on for 30 sec......turned over, and nothing...... I have been reading for weeks in preparation for this car, but I was dreaming I would have had a bit more success than this at this point.... Any help is appreciated...I am planing on stoping by Advance Auto and grabbing 5 glow plugs just to rule them out, and at 10 bucks a piece thats not a bad investment anyway. Thanks SO much in advance for the direction and conversation...I will certainly post some pictures soon when I get my hands cleaner and my thumbs regain feeling from pumping the priming thing so much.... I was also told the alternator was bad, I was given a new one in the box with the purchase, I just figured that would not impede it cranking...but if I get it running I will certainly know quick that its bad.

where are ya? still in charlotte? what side of town? I could give you a hand.
we'll focus on the diesel side of the car first, get good fuel flow through the return line, and verify the IP is putting out at all injectors, then check compression, and glow plugs.

Think I'm going to pop the valve cover off tonight and adjust the valves.

You work for cheap? I'm a poor school teacher with 3 kids...hince the 500 dollar car....will pm you in a second...I'm a few minutes from Alexis, and about 7 from the Hardin road exit off 321....

I am picking up new ones at 11am, in the morning, I hope to have my cranking video on youtube tomorrow evening! And finding out I live near the MB guru Vstech....I am a lucky guy....have always wanted one of these cars, I just hope that it will be the driver I want it to be...either way I am learning a bunch for my first one! Thats worth the 500 bucks....

Have you checked for voltage at the plugs? It could be as simple as a bad strip fuse in the relay.

Hasn't been run in three years? WVO prior? Maybe a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders for a good soak?
Disclaimer: I've never done this, but am repeating anecdotal recommendations of a technique that is alleged to help free up sticky rings. Use at your own risk, or do a search. Oh, and at $500 you're automatically enrolled in the cheap wagon club.

Of course I have Autolites coming to my local shop...will they ruin my car? or will I be ok even if for a short life span?
Relay is getting 12 volts at all three bolts.
