There are currently 20 diesel wagons for sale here in Australia from 2010 to 2012 models.
I've driven one before but they are four cylinder diesels. In my humble opinion (and being a straight 6 diesel and V8 gas driver) I'd have to say that they are not a nice drive. Super comfortable with loads of gadgets and electronics (to eventually fail) but it's difficult to explain the feel of the drive. And so much damn plastic, cheap plastic. When you plant them from a standing start, there is this kind of sling shot feeling. And if your going up a hill and traffic slows down and then resumes, there is this most annoying lag, and then it slings your head back into the head rest. My mum was in the car at the time and knowing nothing about cars other than her W126 420SE, made a comment " this car is a bit jerky" ! . I found them at their most comfortable when I had four adults and suitcases loaded inside. Not nearly as much sling shot but rather just an overall underpowered feeling. I personally couldn't get use to that.

Diesel Wagon and other questions
Does anyone know the European or Canadian model designation for a 2005-2006 E320 CDI Wagon?
More generally regarding the E320 CDI, I'm curious why safety ratings for the front end seem to be four stars rather than five, given that Mercedes tends to lead in crash tests. I've always wondered if the sloping front end might diminish the strength of the front end. |

CDI Wagon
I feel like Dr. Frankenstein trying to resuscitate this thread. So I'm doubling down on the lightning generator. !!
Anyway, earlier on this thread it was mentioned that 2005-06 Wagon CDIs occasionally are spotted here and there (imports). I've been looking for one from here or Canada. Any suggestions? The CDI, I've been told, can have its chip flashed to yield more power. How does this differ from so-called performance chip transplants? Down, Igor. |

All the grey market 123s and 124s came in before the import laws changed, Mercedes actually lobbied with the US government to change the import laws, there is a TON of reading on the topic, too much for this thread. Its not really feasible to bring in a W211 wagon, however a federalization docket exists for the gas cars, if a docket exists for the diesel sedans and the gas wagon, you could probably put in a request with DOT, EPA, and customs and make some kind of a case. However the import and conversion (safety, emissions, etc) has to be done by a registered importer since the car is under 25 years old, so you reach a point of financial infeasibility, anything is possible with enough time and enough money, but do you really want to pay $50,000 for a 8 year old wagon?

CDI Wagon
6-7 years old if a 2006 is selected.
But I get your point, and thanks for the clarification. I see you sold your 350SDL. What was your experience with it like? I drove a 1990 350SD and loved it, but the bent rod scenario scared me off. I know someone who had 12 350SD/SDLs for a taxi fleet, and every single one of them eventually melted down. I though of trying to find one with the MB fixed engine, but... |
