A word of wisdom passed down through the ages. If your 603 hasn't warped or cracked yet, the chances of it doing so are minimal. If it makes a clacking, stay away.

Clacking isn't always a huge thing. Mine made it but I determined it was either the bearing in the idler pulley or the fan clutch.

$177 for a 606 upgraded fan and clutch and it purrs now

If it makes a clacking just make sure it doesn't get worse with revs to the engine.

I recommend buying SDLs from Brian Carlton. He works out all the bugs for you prior to purchase.

Thank you for all of the help.

I will be passing on the car; I called and found out that a garage has the car and swapped a newer engine into the car; for reasons that they couldn't quite explain. Seems like it was a "we got a good body/interior on this car and a good engine in that car" situation.

That's just like mine... wouldn't let that scare you away just means that you have a lower mileage engine in the car and most likely a new head design.... win win.

More than likely a PO overheated the engine and then replaced it.

Well, my major concern is that a non-Mercedes shop (they are just a road-side garage) has replaced the engine. This is a major operation for someone that specializes in these cars; I would trust the swap more if someone who really knows these cars made the switch.

You'd need to define "replaced the engine".

If the garage pulled the entire engine and replaced it with another engine, you can be reasonably OK with such work. There isn't a lot of brain work needed for such a swap and the performance of the replacment engine will be independent of the work done and dependent on the prior maintenance to that engine.

Now, if they decided to pull specific components off the existing engine and replace them, you can be reasonably confident that they screwed up a major component during the installation and it would be surprising if they could even get the engine to start when they finished.
