heated pre-filter, water separator- opinions?

tdavisinva | eBay

Check out this guys filters.

I have a lot of sediment in my tank, and the PO cut out the in-tank screen. I think this is actually good because I don't have to wonder if THAT screen is clogged, and I can whatever is getting trapped in my plastic filter. I am sick of changing them, however, and I like the idea of having a water separator.

What do you think about the heating element? Seems like it would be worth it's salt in the winter.

Should I spring for one of these to replace my pre-filter?

That's a pretty interesting concept. Years ago when I swapped a little Perkins 4.108 into a Vega, I was burning a lot of Mexican fuel. At the time the stuff was just wretched. I used a Racor water separator/pre-filter and it caught quite a bit of junk. Actually that was my secondary filter. Everything went into a auxiliary tank and then a transfer pump moved it into the regular tank through an engine oil filter. Then to the strainer and finally to the engine fuel filter.

Since you don't have the strainer in the tank, I would use this unit in its stead. And then keep the regular MB pre-filter as is. Since both are see-through, you would be able to monitor fuel quality pretty easily.

If you live in cold climes, put the heater on a toggle switch so it's not drawing power all the time.

Just my thoughts....

it heats the fuel to 195 deg F. Will running diesel this warm cause any general improvement?

go with a racor filter. I have one in a couple of my cars. Mechanical water separator and fuel filter combined. More expensive, but worth it IMO, bigger, and replacement elements are available everywhere.

this is what I have in my jetta- toploader 500FG with a 2 micron fuel filter

available in 12 volt.

This is better pic of the same filter from the same seller. It is actually made from a really nice diesel filter that was used in old Peugeot diesels (pre 79). Nothing else really compares. But the one he sell is a modified (i.e. butchered) Peugeot diesel filter. Looks like he added a glow plug heater and removed the primer pump.

If you can find an original one like that in good condition, grab it. You don't want the one that's butchered, you don't want to heat the diesel, it will not do good and will not run right. No other filter compares IMO. It has a glass bottom sedimenter that won't yellow up with age so you can see exactly what's in there and take appropriate action. There is a drain that is easy to operate, the filter element is cheap, easy to find and easy to change, there is a piston priming pump built in. It is solidly constructed and made from exc. materials. I have one in my Jetta as a diesel filter. I like to find more as spares. There is a thimble of water in the bowl currently. I'll shoot a pic of it and post later.

I have been using the 200FG Racor filter on My Datsun Diesel PU since it was new, so for about 440K of it`s 471K miles. really a gread add on, does catch a lot of crap from the fuel and has the large clear sediment/water bowel. also the drain on the bottom.

It uses a replacement filter that every West Marine carries.

I also have on on the 80 240D, and usually carry a spare filter in the Glove box. replacement filters are around $13 - $15.

Below is a good view of the bowel and drain petcock.

A top view. Unscrew the thumb screw and the pand comes then the inside lifts out.

Replacement filter with new "O" rings

The FG500 is a taller filter unit and may be difficult to install in some cases. the FG200 is 8" tall X 6" wide. It is a older style and not being made as far as I know, but new ones can be found of E-Bay and else where. I have see a few in the yards.
They are all a good thing to add, MB should have had something like these from the factory

Here's mine hung from the hood in the service position. You can clearly see a little bit of something settled in the bittom of the glass bowl. Not enough to cause any problems yet.

In stow position, safely nested in a bed made from truck tire innertube, not mounted to anything. Ease of service more important to me than looks. Ed Wyatt will call it a hack job and his counsel will not approve but It works for me, that's all that matters. lol

I'm not knocking the Racor I'm sure it's a good filter. I just love this ltlle old filter made from metal and glass, no plastics!
