It does not and should not run all the time as the pump isn't rated for it but you really don't need it to run all the time, only when you need to change the ride height. There are three wires on these pumps. One ground and two 12v ins. One for pumping one direction (lowering the convertible top) and one for pumping the other direction (raising the convertible top). You only need one direction and thus one of the two wires wired to the switch. Just make sure it pumps the correct direction that you have the flow of the SLS hooked up to.
If you want to source a pump, just search convertible pump on fleebay or look in a junkyard for an old convertible.

Anyone have any success with a tandem pump setup or using a convertible top pump?

Does the duel pump mentioned only go with the TD (as we are in a Diesel discussion forum) or is it for the TD and TE? Ditto with the W210 pump?

Is the W124 pulley or the W123 pump pulley needed?
Speaking for US models for which only wagons/estates have SLS, the tandem pump includes only the power steering reservoir. Includes as in the reservoir sits on the pump even if it's a separable part. The SLS reservoir is elsewhere in the engine bay connected only by hydraulic lines. TD and 2Matic TE use identical pumps through '92 (M103 and OM603). Part number is 124 460 15 80 88 (I don't know why the extra digits). W210 with M104 use part number 002 466 18 01. No Diesel W210 wagons/estates in the US.

The W124 and W210 pulleys use a multirib belt so I don't know how to make it work with W123 v-belt. IIRC replacement pumps don't come with a pulley anyway. If you're converting a non-SLS car to SLS, pulley style is the least of your problems

There are a couple threads over on Benzworld of people using them. I believe the most detailed one had it installed under the hood by a previous owner. Although most seem to recommend installing back by the SLS valve (in the spare tire area).

Nope. Just go to over to the 123 Benzworld forum and put SLS pump in the search box.

IIRC, the info is pretty sparse but it has been confirmed that people have done it. Most wired them to a switch somewhere (glove compartment IIRC) as these convertible pumps were only meant to run 5-15 seconds at a time, not continuously. BUT, if you have no leaks in the system you only need to run the pump when the load in the rear changes momentarily to adjust the ride height back to normal.

To put the pump in the system you would have to make new lines somewhere to fit the pump into the system. I believe the deleted/didn't use the SLS reservoir but I don't recall for certain.

It really shouldn't be too much work. I would think fabbing the new lines to tie the pump in would be the most difficult part. I've thought about this as my 79 TD is NA and have considered putting a turbo drivetrain in and finding a good turbo TD engine is difficult. Much easier to find a turbo D/SD engine. But the car is running fine so I doubt I'll mess with it unless an engine falls in my lap...well not literally.
