Question Sprinter 208D ENGINE will not shut down

Bought a 1998 Sprinter 208D with the 2.3 DI this week. Drove it 450 km home, and when I tried to turn it off, the engine kept running after I turned off the key and took it out! I cannot see electrical connections to the injector pump, only vacuum hoses, so I assume there is a vacuum shutdown mechanism. Which of the two vacuum valves stops the fuel--the one on top the IP or the one one on the back? Have good vacuum from the V pump. Possible solutions?

Probably the one on top. Check the vacuum level there, while you turn the key off.

No, I think it's the one on the back. At least most MB's shut off valves are on the back. What engine is this, the 616? Check that vacuum is actually going to the shut off valve when you turn the key off. If it's not, then you need to check the vacuum prior to the ignition switch and see if you have it there. If you do, the problem is probably the switch in the ignition. The vacuum portion should be capable of being replaced by itself. If you have vacuum at the shut off valve with the key in the off position, then the shut off diapraghm is bad and the valve needs to be replaced. Lots of threads on here about replacement. Read them before replacing. It needs to be done carefully.

It's a 601. The line's probably brown, if that helps.

The before-ignition-switch supply line is also brown, the routing is from vacuum pump into cabin where the valve on the ignition switch is, then back out to the valve on the pump.

Look for Hose disconnections also.

More info on my problem

My motor code is OM 601.943

The valve on top is white plastic, and bolts down with 2 bolts. The one on the back is all metal and spins into a threaded hole.

Yeah definitely the top. Rear sounds like pneumatic idle governor.

Here's a picture of what claims to be the shut off valve on an OM 601. It's metal like the ones on the 616's.

Some one correct me if I am wrong, 601 is not a direct injection.
It should have an inline IP with lines to the injectors.
You could try placing a piece of tube on the vac connection on the back of the IP & seeing if the motor stops when you suck on the tube. It should not take much vac.
You probably have a bad fitting or connection on the vac lines.

Confirmed with Mercedes dealership that shut-off is the top valve (white plastic top with 2 bolts holding it doen.

I have tested vacuum whent he key is turned off at the line going into the valve, and it tests at 28 inches. I have also pulled vacuum with a vac pump up to 26 inches on the valve itself. The valve holds vacuum and does not leak down. However, the engine WILL NOT shut off when I pull 26 inches of vacuum on the valve with my hand pump. Could it be stuck? Or a problem inside the IP?

Anyone have experience changing one of these top mounted valves? I looked at the diesel giant link instructions, but they are for another pump.

Something odd going on here. Why did the other poster say it was on back and not on top and why does the pictures show the typical back mounted metal shut off valve??????
Have you tried pulling a vacuum on the other line going to the back mounted thingy?

Can you post pictures of both things?

Are you talking about the white plastic thing in the picture?

Wikipedia article on the engine says it is indirect injection.

Yes, the white plastic thing in the picture and this picture are correct. I tried pulling vacuum on the back metal valve and the engine speed increased slightly as I applied vacuum, so am assuming it is an idle adjustment or timing advance of some sort.

On my 98 sprinter, the intake comes from the other side of the engine, so there is easier access to the top of the IP. Anyone have experience changing this valve on this configuration IP?
