1985 Dash speaker question

I posted this in the stereo section, too. In my '85 the dash speakers aren't mounted as in earlier models, what's the trick to getting them out?

Are you sure the speakers are OE?

Fairly certain that they're stock. The mount points, well, I'll post pics up in a few..

This is the new speaker trimmed and mocked up in the spare dash I have:

Pre 1985 speaker mount3240

This is a larger shot of the mock up. This dash has the idle control knob hole, don't know the vintage:

Pre 1985 speaker mount, large3241

This is the the speaker I see in the 85 when I took the grill off:

So it looks like I either have to pull the dash vent hoses or take off the dash to access these speakers. Unless someone knows a different method (hopefully).

I just checked with the 85 and the 80, and both are the same.
The drivers side has one phillips screw, lower right corner in the grill part.
Pass side same, but in the lower left side.

Been a while since I removed one, but as I remember, remove the screw, gently lift up and slide forward. think there is a tab on the rear side that holds it down.

remove instrument cluster, reach in and push the metal tabs in, and pop the speaker up. or if you don't care about the speaker, put some cardboard on the dash, use a long flat screwdriver and pop it out while resting the rod of the shaft of the screwdriver on the cardboard so as not to dent the dash

i've never seen that.. i don't know what's going on there. however you can remove the lower kick panel (driver side) and the glove box liner for passenger side and try to come up from the bottom.

The front speakers in the '85 300D-T are retained by two spring clips (each) that are part of the speakers. I was able to reach up from underneath (removal of the lower panels, instrument cluster, and glove box helps) and compress the springs, then push the speaker up and out. It helps to have skinny arms and strong fingers. It's also possible to reach in from the top and press the springs with thin screwdrivers but there is risk of damaging the dash.
