Exclamation W124 Front axle bearing- spindle damage

So I replaced my right front axle bearing yesterday thanks in part to this video
Mercedes w202 changing a front wheel bearing - YouTube

When I got the hub off the spindle and cleaned it up I could see the following damage to the spindle. W124 Front axle bearing- spindle damage-right-front-spindle.jpg

There was also some discoloration on the hub indicating heat as follows:
W124 Front axle bearing- spindle damage-right-front-rotor.jpg

Since I need this vehicle on the road and it was the holiday I chose to install the new bearing kit and I will get a new spline in short order and do it at the same time as I put new front struts on. I adjusted the bearing nut to the best of my ability and am still getting some road noise but I assume that is from the damage to the spline.

Question

So a new "kingpin" will cost me about $250. I am also going to replace the front struts since it looked like the whole assembly will need to come apart and I guess I will need a spring compresser. Are there any tips or a writeup on how to do this?

the springs can stay in place, just rest the car on the jackstand under the control arm.

If this is an EXTREME track vehicle you might consider replacing the spindle - knuckle.

I don't see any galling or rainbow of the spindle.
If it where my car, I would install new bearings and races, pack it with grease + a new seal.

IMO there is no serious issue there.
The old bearing was bad, you caught it early, it was just starting to grab, and spin the inner race on the spindle.

As Roy said.

Whenever I have had em in here with questionable spindles my criteria is to replace it if I can't set the proper bearing clearance in the bearing. You can get good ones on ebay and some money.

if there is a ridge on the spindle, I have several sets available... on the hub, is there ANY play on the new race? I am guessing that shot is after you installed a new race... was the old one loose?

Good point on the hub John.
As long as the bearing 1/2's are tight on the hub & stub shaft, the bearing will be fine. I would be more concerned about the hub having expanded & the bearing being loose in the hub. If its not follow Roy's advice. Best you recheck the bearing free play in 100 miles.

Question

Can't y'all see the grooves worn in the spindle where the inner bearing sits? I put new bearings and races in packed full of grease and it is still making noise albeit different than before.

The pictures may not be clear enough?

If the sound has changed, it may not be the wheel bearing.
A rumbling or cyclic noise could be a bearing.

I suggest you read this
Wheel Bearing Noise

If there is a way of posting audio - video of the sound, it will simplify diagnosis.

also notice the discoloration on the inside of the rotor, photo was after I put the new race in. Noise is worse when wheel is turned to the left while at speed and lessens when wheel is turned to right (passenger wheel bearing)

Thanks for the links to the strut replacement. I couldn't find anything about the spindle replacement but guess I can figure that out. I needed new struts anyways, will be a nice ride again when its done.

I had another look at the HUB.

Sorry I missed the rainbow inside the hub between the bearing races.

IMO; Junk the hub ASAP, it is ruined, and appears seriously compromised.
Call if you have questions on the diy.

I replaced the spindle & struts, wasn't too bad of a job except the parts guy forgot to tell me that the rubber strut snubbers and the boots were a separate item! But putting on the new spindle, I knew how to do the struts and they only took me 1 hour when I got the parts a few days later.

I am taking the car to the local MB indy shop today to have the bearings adjusted. The hub looked ok, a little discoloration is all no cracks.

No worries with the springs, just support the LCA with a suitable jack.

Even if the LCA is not supported the spring will not come out, ask me how I know

Thank God my wife was pulled over to the side of the road and went to pull out when this happened and not doing 50mph
