Where does oil go that spills around the fill cap? 2005 E320 CDI

I was performing my first oil change on the new-to-me E320 CDI. I normally don't use a funnel since the Mobil quart bottles are easy to pour and the oil fill is large enough. A tiny bit of oil spilled around the fill hole, but I can't see where it goes...it definitely didn't leak onto the floor nor onto any part of the engine below the oil fill. I removed the plastic shields and the spilled oil (tsp amount) seems to pool around the oil cap itself in a plastic ring with no way to escape. Is it supposed to burn off or do something even more crazy like go into the crankcase vent system? Not really an issue with the car or dangerous...but curiosity has the best of me now...I can't imagine it sits forever in that little cavity.

Any CDI owners care to chime in?

Thanks!
