Can my tranny be saved?

At low speed, maybe 25mph we heard/felt a rather loud and solid bang
underneath the 123 300cd. first thought was a flex joint or possibly
an axle......nope. I put the back end up on jack stands and rotated
the drive axle(while in park) and started hearing a distictive clicking
or ratcheting sound coming from the very back of the trans....the
shaft going into the trans. was turning.....what did I do?
1982 300cd 310k miles.

Did something go haywire with the "park" pawl and engage while you were driving, which caused it to fail, and now it's pseudo-ratcheting in a semi-broken fashion?

Do you have the ATSG manual for the 722.3 transmission?

If that were the case, wouldn't the trans. still engage? that is not
happening, I have No power being transfered through the tranny.

I read from somebody here on this forum that had bolts at the rubber sphere brake loose and the result was no drive or reverse but wasnt the trannie it self.

Make sure the rear yoke on the transmission is not stripped out. Bit of a long shot probably. Yet it has happened on these cars.

I'm gonna drop the drive shaft hopefully this weekend. That does
make a lot of sense. I also forgot to mention that the nut itself
appears to have been covered by a boot.....that has been ripped
away. Clean metal is seen on the nut and spline.......Very out of
place on the underside of my car.
