Thinking about getting a hitch put on my 87 300D,How much can it tow though

Hi how is it going, thinking about getting a hitch put on my 87 turbo, but wandering how much it can tow? 2 Jetskis?, 1 Jetski ? an empty trailer?

200 lb. tongue weight. I think 2500 trailer weight. I put a Curt hitch on my wagon, but just for a bike carrier. Those are the numbers it was rated at, but I have the wagon.

On the 123 chassis, it's 1500 lbs unbraked and 2500lbs braked if my memory serves me correctly. Don't know the limits on the other chassis.

Make sure you match the load to the vehicle pulling it.

The specs are listed in my owner's handbook - the one "in the glove compartment" - only problem is I have a W123...

...do you not have an owner's handbook?

By the time I purchased my car the hand book had been lost.

The only mention of towing in the owner's manual is towing the vehicle or towing starting the vehicle. Nothing about towing a trailer.

it should be the same as the 123 towing. the vehicle has equal brakes, and weight. and that's what really determines the tow capabilities.

it of course depends on the hitch used, and how it's connected...

Perhaps this will help: 27-550 Removing and installing transmission air-oil cooler with blower (models124/140)

Note
The transmission air-oil cooler with blower is only
required in vehicles with air conditioner or automatic
climate control and trailer coupling if the trailed load
amounts to over 1500 kg gross vehicle weight.

So it would seem that the 124 is capable of more than 1500 kg with the proper set up. I'd make sure your cooling system is functioning at close to 100% if you plan on towing that much weight.

Looking for a hitch for my 78 300D. Looking around underneath, it doesn't look like there is anywhere to mount one. The bumper mounting doesn't look like it would support trailer weight. Any sources?

Back in the days when these w124 300d where new, people in Europe bought them to pull there horse trailer. These trailers have a empty weight of around 750 kg ad the weight from the horse and I guess it will be around 1500Kg.I think they where rated up to 2000kg.This is with trailer brakes and a tongue weight around 75kg.

There are hitches for the 123 which transfer the load to a the trunk floor instead of carrying it on the bumper. The sources above carry them.

If you can fab and weld you can easily make a hitch for them. But if you anyway involve the rear bumper on this setup, you will pull the bumper off shortly. That bumper is mounted to the "energy absorption shocks", (remember those 5 or 8 mph safety bumpers) and they are attached by some type of epoxy glue. That glue is getting very tired at 25 to 30 years.

For about $300 from the UK you can get a W124 Euro hitch shipped to the address of your choice here in the states, I know it sounds a little pricey but everyone on this forum likes to spend their $$$$$ a little differently.
I have always wanted a Euro hitch on one of my Merc.s and I think a turbo diesel is just as good of one as any to do it with. I would look into getting a proper trans cooler for towing, because you know what they say, a cool tranny's a happy tranny. plus the ball size is 50mm. A standard U.S. 2" is 50.8mm, that's less than the thickness of a dime difference. some of my older hitches are probably wore down to a size smaller than that.
I just need to save (easier said than.....) a little longer and its mine.
I'll make sure to take pics when I do the job.
the only thing I'm not looking forward to is drilling holes in my car.
