cylinder head warpage specification?
Hey all,
Does anyone have the head warpage spec from the FSM for a 617? My disks are at a friends who is on vacation My head is warped .006". One machinist at the shop said put it back on with a new head gasket and the other said it would blow the gasket right away. The tools to remove the precombustin chambers are proving to be hard to come by and I really don't want to make tools, order precombustion shims of various thicknesses, and have valves and seat ground, but I need to get the car back on the road asap. I also don't want to a doing all this work for naught. If .006" is allowable great, if not, I guess I'll be making tools or waiting a week are more for some to arrive and another week for machine shop work to be done. Thanks, Brad A new car is looking better all the time.

New car = new problems in my opinion
Did you know you can acess the FSM via the official Mercedes site www.startekinfo.com? (You need out of date software to see it but it has been officially released) Anyway to speed you on chapter 03-015 in the non turbo manual says Permissible irregularity of parting surface Length ways 0.10 mm Crosswise 0.05mm Good luck - better the devil you know you know?

I'm also wondering if a turbo spec would be different than a non-turbo? .1mm = .0039"' or .002" out of spec for a non-turbo Thanks

If it is out of spec for the non turbo the turbo will be either the same or stricter...
See this thread for the other question Mercedes Startek have done the right thing - to help you do the right thing!

However, for the longitudinal direction, knowing that M/B is always conservative, I would take the shot at installing it with .006". Remember that you've got about 100,000 lb. of clamp load at the head gasket. Such force is more than sufficient to eliminate the out of flat condition at the point of installation. |
