Anyone Ever Buy a New GP Harness?

My 400K '82 W126 300sd is starting to age and while working on the car today noted how stiff the GP harness (baked insulation and wiring) is and thinking about replacing - anyone ever buy a new one? Curious about the cost - anyone know?

The Russian Parts site only showed the older loop type Glow Plug System; so I could not look up the Wires.

If you wanted to make your own see the part numbers in the pic.
You might even be able to reuse your Connector Plastic Housing.

The Housing has an MSRP of $3.40 the Pin Connectors MSRP of $3

In the pic is has that you need only one Pin connector (Round Pin Bushing) but I think you will need 5.

As long as it will pass the current to get the car started I would leave it alone. It is not in any way similar to the plug wires on a gasoline engine where a failing wire leads to bad running engine and high fuel costs.

Yeah leave it alone unless you have a break in continuity. The stiffness is mostly in the sheathing, not the wire itself. Our old Mercedes used excellent quality wires and lugs, better than most that you can buy today.

Mybe you could wrap the exterior where the Wire is near the Block with Electrical Tape to reduce the possibility of a Short.

The Problem area on a 123 is under the Fuel Filter where there is a small Bracket where the Wires run thoough. The Rubber on the Bracket comes off and you have Metal to Wire insulation Contact.

As I aluded to; with a New Connector and Pin Busnings + Eyes you could make your own. However, you would lose the Color Coded Wires; but, I don't think that is important if you make sure number 1 wire goes on number one Glow Plug and so on.

As far as I know the w123 OM617 harness is NLA. I hunted through the dealer and the Classic Center. Supposedly they used be sold at around $180.

I was trying to get one for a project car that was missing the harness. I ended up pulling one from a w126 in the junkyard.

How handy are you with Soldering?

Using Dave's (GSXR's) picture and part numbers 911 has provided, assemble the
necessary "Endings".(You will have to acquire your own "Ring" fittings for the
Glow Plug end of each wire.)
Then get some Tinned MARINE Wire of AWG #10
(Marine Wire is MANY small strands allowing FLEXIBILITY)

The Seemingly HONKING HUGE #10 AWG wire will allow MORE current passage.
[Your Glow Plugs will thank you]

I ordered 5 different colors (AND matched them) to match the factory schematics from:
Tinned Marine Wire, The power behind it all

Hmmm . . . good with soldering, always easiest to tin up the ends first then remelt into pre tinned terminals - hmmm, thinking now about this

I am surprised that no one who uses the EPC has not supplied a part number.

With the Part Number the price can easily be looked up as there are a few online sites that sell genuine Mercedes parts.

On replacing the whole Glow Plug Wire Harness; it is not unusual for corrosion to develop between the Wire and the Crimped over Metal on the Eyes.

I don't think so. I wouldn't replace mine and it has a lot of miles. Those wires are very stiff, very well insulated, plus they are a very heavy gauge wire. Nothing there to wear them out unless you beat on them.

No GP harness available so I removed and cleaned very carefully and wrapped with self fusing silicon tape - looks great and well protected - a worthy job!
