Diesel Purge Frequency

Has anyone developed a millage schedule for diesel purge?
I generally do my 1984 300D twice a year driving an average of 20,000 miles per year. Obviously with these cars engine health and fuel quality are going to play a big part in carbon build up. Sometimes I feel it could be
more frequent though.

driving habits play the most part to carbon build up... but there shouldn't be any in the IP...
I think clean fuel tank, and constant minding of the prefilter is key to keeping the gunk out of the IP and the fuel system in general.
STARTON is your friend!
as is a FULL fuel tank as much as possible!

Did my first diesel purge yesterday. 1984 300SD with 371,000 miles on the original engine. I was unimpressed with the purge. I didn't get much black fuel coming from the fuel return line and haven't noticed much change in power or smoke quantity, etc. The car has been well maintained which might make the difference. If in the first 15 years of your car's life, no one ever changed the fuel filters then maybe Diesel Purge is worth doing often, otherwise I am thinking every 5 years. Remember this procedure is not suggested by the manufacturer on any particular interval. Probably good to do every once in a while, but I would be careful to not go overboard.

I remember reading posts by Marshall Booth where he said never to use diesel purge. A search should turn up his reasoning.

I have yet to do a diesel purge.

I have had about twenty plus mb diesels plus nearly a dozen american made diesel suburbans and pickups.

Probably a million miles at least.

I try to buy fuel from reputable stations, keep the filters changed, and if any question will use some biocide.

It seems unneccessary to me and in fact a bad idea. If an engine is running fine cleaning things too much could potentially create leakage.

I ,frankly, think it's snake oil. Not harmful, just not very useful. Like trying to keep your teeth clean by using only Listerine instead of going to a dental hygienist for a brutal scraping. Need to yank 'em and give 'em a good scrub....

I did it on the SD when I got it. It sat for long periods of time. It didnt do anything. The only thing that got the engine to sound better and run better was regular driving with some italian tuneups and maybe a good road trip.

X2 on the snake oil theory and I also remember Marshall Booth's opinion which I respect.

I NEVER used diesel purge in almost a million miles of driving 123 cars. I changed both filters every 25 k miles and that was it. Never any problems.

That said, my cars got driven regularly and got driven a LOT. I probably was really lucky on fuel during that period.

I used Lubri Moly Diesel Purge as a result of hammering/cackle. It did the trick for me. Just sayin'
