I hope the tow "home" isn't far.

Good Luck and please let us know why it's in there? Did you get a key with it?

I don't know about the key, but I can always order one. I also have a set from a former parts car I can use.

The tow home is as short as 18.7 miles, but more like 23 staying in bigger roads.

It was nicely optioned (when new).

I'm curious as to what melted to cause that black line of plastic on the left rear fender. The antennae? Give us a theory of what the fire was?

Kerry --- take a look at the pics from the link in post #1. The black line is indeed the antenna. From the other pics, it appears the car was next to a fire.

I bet this car will run again........probably got parked after the alternator died and battery was dead or from a fuel issue or from glow plugs not working or ........ Well, we all know it could be from multiple issues.

I went by a pick & pull this morning and grabbed two tail lights (with light bulb holders) and the rubber seal for the right rear door (I figure that's toast). Total for these items was ~$56.

Of course I'll share. It's Crazy Ray's. They have 5 locations in and around Baltimore.

I spent a good bit of time cleaning out the 300TD today. There are lots of pictures and you are all welcome the look through them here: 1987 Mercedes 300TD pictures by pwogaman - Photobucket

I will otherwise lay out a logical sequence with narrative below.

I was pleasantly surprised by two options I had previously not noticed.

Heated and orthopedic seats! The orthopedic seat controllers were in pieces on the floor, but that's okay. I grabbed a set of controllers on a business trip in Utah last year.

There is also an adjustable steering column:

The front right ball joint boot is split and needs to be replaced:

The brakes have some rust on the disks, but nothing too serious. It should wear through without any problems. All the brakes also have good pads.

Right rear:

Right front:

Left front:

Left rear:

The brake fluid is clean:

The exhaust system is intact:

The left quarter panel appears to have been replaced with an OE piece:

There is blended painting on it:

There is minor seam rust where the new panel went in:

There are a few spots of rocker and/or jack port rust:
Right rear:

Left rear (also on the replacement quarter panel seam):

The hood pad is disintegrating and needs to be removed:

The heat damage is no worse than how it appears (i.e. limited to exterior):

Note melted filler door lock:

Handle still works:

Old lenses out:

Cleaned openings:

Installed replacements (existing light bulb rails were fine - including intact clips):

I will need to move the badges back where they belong:

Door panels are all fine:

Missing speaker cover is in car, but tabs are broken (I will rebuild them as I did on the 300TE).

Left headlight door is cracked:

Need replacement sunvisor clips:

All wheels have been replaced.

The interior is filthy! But should clean up nicely with a lot of elbow grease.

Missing third row bottom set cushion:

Clean brake fluid!

I wonder if the front seats and console wood are original. There's no mention of heated and/or orthopedic seats in the option list but there are heater switches in the console and those sure look like vacuum hoses for orthopedic bladders by the buckles. Are there dial controls ahead of the front seat buckles? Must be early seats since they don't have fry catchers. That engine number is very low - 000669. Maybe Gottlieb Daimler himself torqued the head bolts. The ex-Jeremy '87 300D is an early car too and the engine number is 001812.
