That's a good question, but if it doesn't I've got a spare OM602.962 I'll put in it that does.

hot battery

Do you mean you haven't dropped a hot battery in that thing yet to see? I've got a HOT battery and my toolbox in my backseat. If we had time warp travel, I could make a short detour and lend you a hand after work. I even have a change of old clothes and remembered my old tenny shoes.

That air vent behind the rear lights is backwards - these louvres should be on the outside of the car, otherwise you will get stupid moisture, dust and noise problems. I dont understand why body shops cant get this right, they just shove it in from the outside in while they are supposed to go from inside outwards.

Thanks for noticing; I hadn't. I'll switch it around when I source a replacement bumper.

Over the last few days I have done the following:

Buffed half the hood, just to see that it could be done, and cleaned up some of the burn damage. While most of the smoke damage cleaned up, some of the damage will require either some respraying or burn a similar mark on the other side so it matches.

Removed seats for cleaning.

Pulled the carpeting for a power wash and thorough cleaning and also so the interior can dry out. The musty smell is not so noticeable now and should clear out all the way.

Replaced 2 of the 3 bad glow plugs (donors from my spare OM602), but that was enough to start it!!! Yes, it lives! It runs smoothly as well.

(Click on the picture to open up a video of the engine running.)

Tested essentially all systems with the following failures: rear windows; one low beam bulb out; horn; ACC blower.

I got antique tags so it is street legal, but to get it road worthy I will need to complete the following:

Put carpet and seats back in (after cleaning and drying of course);

DX horn - I have an extra post-facelift steering wheel I will install at the same time;

Replace headlight bulb;

DX ACC - I have several extra blowers and regulators and one extra N22 push button controller.

I can cover the rest if the nits after these items once I'm mobile with it.

Special thanks to Johnhef for letting me work on it at his house and giving me pointers on the glowplug issues.

WOW. It's terrific that this car, otherwise crusher-bound, has been rescued by someone who not only loves these cars, but knows how to fix 'em.

Nice work, and great photos. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome score, looks like you're totally in the Super Cheap Wagon Club.

Can't wait to see that engine compartment cleaned up, take care of that oxidation and you'll have one sweet ride.

This one here. The vent, together with the one on the other side, allows air to pass through the vehicle from the climate control. Absent these vents the air conditioning would just blow into the interior and eventually build up pressure and decrease efficiency. If you want fresh air in, you have to let the old air out.

Here are some before pictures of the absolutely disgusting carpeting. Honestly, I don't see how people can drive around in cars with this much crud built up in them. Simply pulling everything out was definitely the right thing to do. I have since hit everything with a power washer and blasted the crud off; something I could not have done with it all still in the car. I am amazed though at how robust the Mercedes carpeting is, to be able to withstand a thorough power washing and come out intact. Unfortunately the bleached area is staying bleached, but it is under the rear seat so you can't see it. I have it all hanging out to dry now, but it is too dark to get any good pictures. I get some and put them up tomorrow.

STEAM is the best way to get all that crud out.
the stain can be painted with vinyl paint for a fairly close match that will stay. carpet paint is also available.
