Here are a few quick shots of the main floor carpeting. I have not used soap on it yet.

Based on all the swirl marks - are you using a turbo nozzle?

I became aware of, and only bought the car because of your post. Thank you (btw, my wife hates you now). I saw it only an hour before the end of the auction, and I needed just about every minute of it to finalize registering with GovDeals. This was my first purchase with them; although, I have made many through Govliquidation.com of DOD surplus. It was purely an impulse buy. The GovDeals process itself was fine, but picking up the car from the DC impound lot was a pain. Just make sure you read all the fine print. I would probably forego getting anything else from the DC location unless it was a truely spectacular deal.

After a brief break for vacation and working on the 300SD dual airbag retrofit, I've turned my attention back to the 300TD. Today I got the now dry main carpeting back in after sopping up what appears to have been possibly diesel additive from the driver's side floor. Fortunately, whatever it was - it wasn't water - has not left any smell. Hopefully I'll get the other seat and trim back in this weekend, and then start in on a few electrical gremlins. The front passenger seat needs a new bolt fastener (which I have). I needed to cut through it to get the set out. I drove it home (about 40 miles) and it ran great; a lot smoother than either of my 300D 2.5 Turbos.

Here are what new pictures I have for today.

Yesterday I trouble shot the blower motor. It is nice to have spares.

I replaced the #6 glow plug (the last bad one) while I had the wiper/in intake out of the way. Unfortunately the end cracked when tightening the wire connector, but I suppose that is what you get for using used parts sometimes. My only option for finishing that part of it up today (Labor Day) is to get a Autolite locally. >:-( But what I might do is take the Bosch out of #3 or #4, whichever is easier to access, and out that in the #6 spot just because it is such a pain to get to with the air intake and intermediate firewall in the way.

I also got another floor bolt for the front passenger seat to replace the rusted one I had to cut out (pictured above).

I found the door locks are not working properly, so I'll need to trouble shoot the vacuum system there. I have a couple extra vacuum pumps, but none with the orthopedic seat port. I seriously doubt the seat bladders are good after 25 years anyway.

I took the loose lining the rest of the way off the B pillar trim and cleaned up both sides. I'll re-glue that today with contact cement. I would have done it last night but I didn't want to smell up the whole house with the glue. I can't finish installing the front seat belts until that is done.

The radio seems to be trashed. It is/was a Becker 754. It just clicks when pushing the on button. I'll try a different one today.

I replaced the #6 glow plug with a borrowed donor from my 92 300D's #1 slot. That will be a breeze to replace compared to the 300TD #6 slot. Having the firewall out of the made a huge difference, but since that went back in I wanted to get it done at the same time. The broken glow plug had stamped MB markings, but was not a Bosch. I wonder if I got a counterfeit part somewhere along the supply line.

Now I get a good glow indicator on start-up! Although, the indicator light color film on the right has moved about two MM to the right, so the color of the blank slot next to it bleeds over.

The blower problem turned out to be the dash controller. I swapped it out with a spare after replacing the lights on it.

Speaking of lights, the dash lights downstream of the X6/1 have been intermittent. We noticed them flickering last night and then they were out for my drive home. I replaced a few bulbs, such as in the ash tray, and they worked. Of course, once I got the dash back together they stopped working again. I did note the X6/1 was behind the radio slot to the right (see picture at grey and blue wiring). The FSM places it on the left side of the transmission mound under the side panel carpeting. I wonder if there is some history to that. Additionally, I noticed hand soldiering with two positive wires at the ash tray light. I wonder if someone tried a half-ass modification involving the dash lights. I'll have to take it further apart to see.

A real bonus last night was finding out the cruise control worked!

Also, the steering wheel adjuster seems okay.

The '86 300D and '92 300D use different glow plugs! The '87 uses Bosch 80006 plugs while the '92 uses 80031 plugs. IIRC the difference is 2-3mm in length. Make sure the plugs tips aren't bottoming against the prechamber if 80031s are longer.

[edit] Beru and Valeo are also OE suppliers of glow plugs so not seeing Bosch or a Bosch logo doesn't mean it isn't OE.

The warning light strip slips in and out of the cluster housing. It should be a simple matter to seat is properly the next time you have the cluster out.

Here is what was the problem with the central locking system beyond the pump being bad itself. The system is on the 30 circuit though fuse C via the X30 power distribution. Other items on the circuit down from the X30 power distribution were getting power, so that meant there was a problem further down the line from there. The central locking system schematic does not adequately show the splitting location, but the power distribution page does. The X48F connection (between the vacuum pump and the X30) turned out to be the problem. The pictures at the floor of the right rear foot area in the cable tray show the splitting crimp corroded on the red/white power wires. I solved the problem by cutting off the corroded part of the wires and recrimping with new connector and finishing off by wrapping with waterproof 88T tape.

I made some more progress today. Beautiful weather for it too. I was able to put in the passenger seats now that the central locking system is trouble shot and I did not need to get under the carpet anymore.

I changed the right side trim and right rear door handle. The three side trim clips on the front right fender did not line up, strangely enough. I expected more uniformity from MB on that. I will need to replace the three hole holders for the trim as well.

I reglued the loose bits on the door panel while I was at it.

I washed the outside for the first time today. She cleans up nicely, but still needs some remediation at the right rear door and quarter panel. And, of course, the rear bumper.

I still need to get the glue off where the badging was improperly placed. I suppose I can go ahead and put the badges where they belong since they won't be in the way of the glue mess.

I noticed some fuel smell after driving, so I cleaned off the engine so the leaking area would be more evident. It looks like it needs a couple of drip lines (I'll just replace them all), a few injector seals, and a full complement of pre-injector seals and washers on the injector pump. I'll just do all of these at one time and take off the cross-over plenum to make it all the easier. In the mean time, it is not leaking too badly. These pictures are after a drive round the Capital Beltway. BTW, it runs great!!!
