84 300sd braking woes

Hey guys, my 300sd has horridly bad brakes at the moment. I'm ordering two new tires to replace two low tread depth ones that are on the front, but I don't believe that the tires are the root of the problem only a contributing factor. The light that is the round circle with rays coming off it is on, I believe this is the abs light, no? I hope the 300sd came with abs or I'm going to look like a fool
My service manual hasn't come in the mail yet and for safety reasons I feel I should diagnose this problem ASAP. The light comes on as soon as the key is turned. No driving or brake application necessary, which leads me to believe it's probably not a wheel sensor. any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

I can't remember exactly what the symbol looks like but the car does have 'wear sensors' on the pads which activate an idiot light. I'm thinking your pads are worn out.

Brian, thanks for the heads up about no abs, I guess the tires really are that bad. They are winter tires, I guess it's simply too hot for them in Savannah GA in this weather we've been having.

Kerry, that makes sense. The woman I bought the car from had a few reciepts in the glove box, if I remember correctly one was for the front brakes, but she said the rears were getting low, and they have started squeeking. Will check this out tommorow. Gotta bleed the brakes anywho.

Thanks guys,
Mike w.

No sensors on the rear brakes I think. Perhaps when the front brakes were done, they didn't install the sensors correctly.
