From Crusher-Bound Dog to ALDA-less Beast in Two Days

In another thread I crowed about my acquisition of a cheap 87 300D. The owner was about to send it to the crusher and let me have for the crusher price of $400. Among its many problems I was told that "the turbo didn't work." And sure enough, it was sluggish. And when I floored it it would belch these huge billows of smoke.

Replaced the air filter, changed the fuel filters, changed the oil. Drove it hard. The more I drove it, the more the smoke disappeared, the quicker and stronger it seemed to get. But it still didn't seem to be as quick as it ought to be.

So I removed the ALDA. Had been reluctant to do it on my other cars...afraid I would damage something. But on a car I got for $400....what have I got to lose??

All I can say is....WOW! WHAT A TRANSFORMATION!!! The crusher-bound dog has been transformed into a beast in just two days. All the power I could ever want and then some!

My only problem: I'm finding it difficult not to smoke. My SDL doesn't have its ALDA either, but I have no difficulty preventing it from smoking. So not sure what to do about that. I guess I can always shim the ALDA and put it back.

Anyway, that's my success story for the day!

Congratulations. I once got a great deal on a 240d which had contaminated fuel and a stuck caliper from sitting. It was a nice car.

If you hang around diesels enough you will come across one or two with these simple problems.

Come to think of it I sold one cheaply that years later I figured out had bad glow plugs.

smoking

theres a patch or gum you could try ;)

I smoke (again :(), but the w210 e300doesn't, even on B100.

maybe the exhaust is just terribly sooted up from the previous life of being a "dog" and smoking like a chimney

I have wondered if it will improve. But it seems like smoke is from unburnt fuel....exactly the same smoke that happens if I mash the pedal on my SDL. But it just seems to happen more easily on the 300D.

unburnt fuel would be white

I don't believe that's correct.

I think completely unburnt fuel would be more of a white mist, overfueling/incomplete combustion/partially unburnt diesel is black.

That's what I meant....the partially unburnt diesel....that's clearly what I'm getting with the ALDA removed.

That's not surprising as biodiesel has fewer particulates than dino fuel.

I agree that unburnt fuel gives white smoke, while black smoke is caused by fuel burnt with too little air or oxygen. Figure out how to get more air in. A good air filter and a well performing turbo are things to look at.

It's because I removed the ALDA....the solution is for me to train my foot.

dagObx 07-29-2012 03:45 PM

Yes, it might be your foot - but on the other hand in your original post something was said about "turbo not working". If you have eliminated a suffering turbo from the equation, you will need to train your right foot. Same thing happened to me;)

Think you can keep your right foot off the go pedal long enough to update your sig line?

Who, me? It's going up for sale. I might sell mine before you sell yours!
