HELP! Engine died on the 300SDL. Hard to turn by hand now.
Wife was driving on the freeway and then she said she heard loud engine noise and losing power. Pulled to the hard shoulder. Went to rescue her and the car started but shake at idle. Tried to drive it home and then engine stalled and would not start again. Long story short, the car is now kaput.
Tried to do a compression test today but engine turned over very slowly with injectors ALL removed. Timing chain intact. I tried to turn by hand at the crank bolt but it is very hard. What can stop the engine from turning? What could be in the way, broken vacuum pump or others? I tied the shut off valve to 'shut off' position to stop fuel from squirting out but it should not matter. Your input is appreciated.

Oil level? I'd suspect vacuum pump failure or low oil/oil pressure causing bearing failure/seizing.

Does it have oil? No mention of this yet. I might not have driven it further. Did the dash gauge show oil pressure? Are the fuel filters fresh? So many questions not answered.

Oil was changed and just topped up the night before. Check the oil now and it is at the full mark. Valve cover removed aleady to check timing chain. Cam shaft seems to be OK. I am going to remove the VP and check it out.

I'd be tempted to pull the oil pan and see if anything is clogging the oil pickup screen....

I'm sorry to hear about that and also sorry it's not the first time I hear such a story. Yes, pull vacuum pump then side sump.
You might have lost a bit of chain guide hindering chain progress. Stop leaning on the engine until you peak into the sump. Note, this is Dave/gsxr's engine before he cleans it Sixto 87 300D^2 Last edited by sixto; 07-29-2012 at 03:51 PM. |

It is not easy to pull the oil pan on the 603. I will pull the VP and side sump and take a look.

Sixto: Holy crap that is a clean bit of motor there. Is that a view into a fresh rebuild prior to final assembly? So clean !! (Museum display).

Bad news - Shavings in sump
Remove the Vacuum pump and it seems to be OK. All the ball bearings are there. Open up the side sump and found quite a bit of shaving inside. It seems to be fragments of a thin metal tube. What could it be? What next?

Did the engine have oil pressure when you started if after the problem occurred?

Can you spin the turbo impeller? Maybe the bearing came apart and flushed down the return line.
If you dare and can do so without getting hurt, feel around inside the oil pump pick-up strainer. You shouldn't feel anything more than a mesh. Sixto 87 300D^2 |
