The intoxicating sound of the OM603

I changed the oil this afternoon, and decided to make a few recordings. I tried to get a 0-60 recording of that beautiful sound, but my microphone didnt pick it up too well.. I'll try again.

Each are 260KB MP3 files of it idiling, the second one you hear some injector knock or lifters that I hear occasionally and is very common with the 603 engine.. Enjoy.

LOL. And I thought I had run out of things to do! Great sound though.

Great work, turbodiesel. Mine sounds just like that. I thought mine was loud, LOL.

I think I'm in LOVE! That is such a wonderful sound. My OM603 has brand spankin' new injectors and sounds much the same.

Thought I was the only strange bird to record such things. I wire-tied a micro-cassette recorder to the air intake on my VW TDI after installing a cone filter and did a few 0-60 and 0-80 runs. Pretty neat indeed!

Lance:

If yours (new head and injectors) also sounds like that, then ours all sound normal. I always thought there was something wrong with mine.

Lance Allison 02-21-2002 09:53 PM

Yep, I confirmed the (what I think is) lifter noise still existed while driving through the parking deck at the office.

I did notice the pulse sound of the engine is more precise now. Prior to changing out the injectors, it wasn't quite as smooth and didn't idle with the precision it does now. My #2 and #3 injectors were well out of spec, I'm certain. Definitely has a smoother idle and has less smoke, too.

I ended up having to order a replacement "new" #6 injector. It was leaking where the injector body screws down into the housing. I just replaced it tonight and all appears fine.

The verdict's still out about the fuel mileage, we'll have to see.

LOL. Yeah, I am a bit of a wierdo when it comes to my diesels!

While I had my hood open, I brought out my laptop and just rested it on the air filter cover, hit record and started it and just hit the throttle while inside the car. It was some sight, my neighbors must have thought I was nuts, they are probably right! :)

There's nothing better than the sound of round engines, Harley Davidsons, and MB Diesels. Thank you, this completes my audio collection.

Beautiful sound!!

What a great post!! Listening to that my auld one doesnt sound so bad!!:)

I think we are all a bit nuts......and if my wife finds out I am listening to diesels idle over the internet, she will be certain that I have gone over the top at last.

I thought the "newer" diesels were quieter than my 617 but yours has as much or more of the clatter noise. Of course, I don't mind at all.

Its normal for me to get home at night and get out of the car to listen for a bit before shutting off. Strange but true.

Oh wonderful!! Now I want one.:D

I love that sound:p I had a Peugeot turbo diesel that sounded a lot like that and I video taped it before I got rid of it. Got some nice (to me) sounds of the engine and the turbo whistle.

I think the best sounding one is the 220 diesel.

For your next task...capture the Mercedes door thunk:cool:
