AL129X in a 1981 300sd

I checked my alternator yesterday after my car failed to start from installing my ac system... I figured the extra strain made it finally kick the bucket.... but instead i saw 16.5 amps at idle... I think i also fried my battery... ouch... anyway i am just going to install a AL129X series....

can i wire this into the wire hub on the inner fender... or does it need to go all the way to the battery...

Does my current pulley work direct fit... i have read that it works good on a 300d so i felt confident...

any write ups on a 300sd all i could find a 300d

Thumbs up

I routed my main feed to the battery, the small wire to 'excite' the alternator is back to that same OE terminal block. Bolts to the SD the same as the D.

Nothing really to the upgrade. Hell, that alt fits the 560 with a simple reclock.

I don`t think there is all that much difference between the "D" and "SD".
When I installed the one in our "D" I removed the wiring harness from the alternator to the terminal with the 3 screws by the battery, and used it as a template to make a new harness, and increasing the wire size. I did run an additional wire from the terminal block to the battery.

thanks.... I have been doing some reading on this swap on another forum and someone recommended turning the housing in the back so the lead doesn't hit the motor... and also adding a second ground strap for the increased amperage...

i finished my install today... I used new 10 gauge wire to the wiring block and had to buy two new belts that are size 15 41 5 which gave me ease of putting on and perfect tension without cutting anything to get the alternator to fit....
