Two-way

A two-way (or "oxidation") catalytic converter has two simultaneous tasks:
  1. Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
  2. Oxidation of hydrocarbons (unburnt and partially burnt fuel) to carbon dioxide and water: CxH2x+2 + [(3x+1)/2] O2 → xCO2 + (x+1) H2O (a combustion reaction)
This type of catalytic converter is widely used on diesel engines to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions. They were also used on gasoline engines in American- and Canadian-market automobiles until 1981. Because of their inability to control oxides of nitrogen, they were superseded by three-way converters.

My '95 Dodge had an oxidation catalyst to reduce PM to the Jan. 1 1994 standards. These standards remained the same until Jan 1. 2007, when they were reduced by a factor of 10. With the advent of the 4-valve head with its center-mounted injector and electronic timing control, the catalyst was no longer needed. Some Fords and Chevy's still used them on certain models even before the 2007 standards became effective. Certain Dodges also used them with the CR engine to meet the 5 state standards in 2004. The engine power output was also reduced, in the case of the Dodge from 305 HP down to 235. They were used on the "600" engine for the 2004.5 model year which was 50 state legal, but with its retarded timing and in-cylinder EGR, it lost a lot of fuel economy and the oil would get dirtier than our old Mercedes.

It seems that big rigs are allowed to belch out soot all across the country but it is not OK any more to sell a Diesel car with out the hippy hardware. I have also seen some newer trucks with DPFs and Urea systems. I also see more of them on the side of the road than older trucks. Ever see a newer model truck or car go into regen mode? Talk about a soot storm and the smell burns your nose. That is supposed to be better for the kids, I guess. Ever driven behind one of those new school buses? The exhaust burns my nose and smells like I am breathing in bleach! I guess that is better for the kids.

If you want the real answer to emissions control devices, follow the money and the lobbyists. When governments mandate, politicians make money. It is no more complicated than that.

As far as an '83 300D having an emissions device, I have not seen one yet that had one. If it did, you should see a trap-ox box near the turbo charger. Someone could have swapped in an 85 engine.

He didn't say he has a cat or ox. He OPed asking about his resonator plugging up and somehow the thread got hijacked into a debate on diesel catalysts and emissions....

Everything will be fine when he figures out this isn't a TDi he's got....

You know what? Go live in a city like Beijing or Mexico City for a little while and then come back and tell us all how much you like the air. Both government and emissions control tech could stand a lot of improvement. But I'd rather we don't dispense with them completely.

Cat's came to diesels much later than gasoline cars. My 96 Dodge had one. None of the W123 diesels I've owned have had one. My 82TD has a big sticker under the hood for the inspection station "EMISSIONS INFORMATION - NON CATALYST"

PS What's a resignator?

You are absolutely right. This tread got perverted quickly. Anyway, I have not heard of a resonator getting plugged. It is possible I guess, but you would most likely have some other major issue going on.

Well, over population is the real root cause behind all of this "dirty" air we breathe. When a few million people want to live in a few square miles with each other, they can expect some issues. I honestly don't see the reason why people feel the need to coagulate together in cities when there is so much open land available. Let them coagulate though, more land and fresh air for me.
