Tensioner good idea - checking belt tensioner now - wow that would be one bad bearing or is there some other effect going on? |

Stethoscope injector listening results: Injector #2 clearly the loudest in tone replication of this noise ~ guessing 20% greater noise compared to the other injectors. I put the stethoscope to the block in multiple places - like the oilpan interface but didn't get a loud signiture of the noise. Belt tensioner - released tension on this until the belt started to make a noise from vibration - but no noise change in the tapping noise. Hmmmm - what next? |

Hey
Hey other 603 owners......does anyone think this thing is running on 5 cylinders?
I've never had a 603 that sounded like that --- could it be a lifter? In my limited experience, I'd say that's a hearty knock, for sure. Anyone else ever heard a 603 like this?

I would boroscope the cylinders. Verify something isnt awry or stuck in a piston top.

If it were running on 5 I think there would be some engine motion. I know I might get flamed here - you may want to try a cure in a can - put some Seafoam in the oil. If it's a noisy lifter it may quiet down after a bit.

It's running on all six. Mine has a similar tap in it. Do a couple of short oil changes 1000 to 1500 miles. Also i would try some motor flush to clean all the gunk out of the engine. Mine is a lifter that gets quieter with temp increase

If you cracked each injector line and the noise didn't stop, it's not an injector or delivery valve. You can test the lifters in place. As you turn the crank, press on the lifters in contact with the base radius of the cam. I know good lifters are difficult to compress but I don't have first hand experience with such resistance. If the problem is a lazy lifter, one should offer less resistance. Hopefully the lifter will collapse under finger pressure. Be careful if you need to use a dowel or some such soft ended tool to press the lifter. The lifter face is slick even when dry. You might damage a lifter face, cam lobe or cam tower if the tool slips. Sixto 87 300D^2 |

I'm not sure that what you're doing to the tensioner tests the damper. If the damper ends are worn, it doesn't matter if the belt is loaded or loose, any vibration will cause a noise. Take a rod and pry the tensioner body away from the front cover. The sound will change if the tensioner ends are the source of the noise.

Got it - I now see where the sound is suspect coming from, previously I thought the idea was a bearing noise on the tensioner wheel. This makes sense - i'll check it out. THX |

Also it looks much easier to pull the injectors - or does this not provide as good of a veiw (valves - piston top, cylinder walls)? |

Ok the most dreaded question to ask:
1.Does anyone think this is a connector rod? 2. How about a crank bearing (though i think less chance since noirse sounds in the upper area - though could be misleading) 3. Piston slap? If any of these seem likely - is there a tell tale test for confirmation of the suspected failure? |
