New Vacuum Pump unboxing!

I spent close to $300 for the thing, why not some unboxing photos!

Sealed! The shipping box it came in was a perfect size as well, nice and tight, not even a rattle.

Oh look, enclosed instructions and dam type gasket(I might just use this type)

Once I opened the box I was rather impressed with the packaging. The Febi pump I received was a joke compared to this. The Febi pump had some packing paper and the pump wrapped in plastic and it moved about in its box.
This is what I expect for a $300 part

Correct, updated bearing

Pierburg logo cast on the inside

Mercedes star and part number machined off

Correct, updated face plate with torx screws and sticker.

Can't wait to install this thing!

Thanks for the photos. I just installed one in mine, and didn't think to do that!

Don,

Help a new guy out....

Besides sexy (which it is), is this a typical (needed) replacement part for 123/126's?

I'm in the throws of purchasing a 126 ('84 300SD) and am trying to get educated. Seems like everything on these is vacuum actuated, so besides cracked hoses and such, do these die after a while? (Just guessing)

FWIW, I'm NOT trying to open a can of worms (if this is a sore subject or some such.....)

Thanks in advance,

PK

It is a replacement part and opinions vary to when it needs to be changed out. I have changed them on both my 95 E300s. One has 293k miles and the other just turned over 250k.

It's more or less a 603 thing to replace.

Old ones have an inferior bearing/race design that sometimes fails catastrophically allowing ball bearings and bearing race debris to fall into the timing chain galley. There is a chance that some of this debris doesn't make it to the oil pan, and jams in the timing chain crank sprocket. I think there is a rebuild kit that addresses the issue. It is mentioned elsewhere in the forum.

I decided it was cheap insurance for the engine.

Indeed. Project just got more expensive.

Might as well do the water pump, t-stat, and belt tensioner too.

belt tensioner is next on the list after new front tires since I scored two good tires.

I just messed with the water pump and the bearing still feels tight when turned by hand, and no sign of leaks....might leave that alone for now.....they don't look too hard to replace with the engine in the car.

I have an open slot where the A/C was, I should install an onboard air compressor or second alternator.

... uh, that's what I thought until my 85SD pump went belly up... took out the chain stuff, cam, cam gear... oil pump... etc...

INSPECT THEM EVERY YEAR, AND STOP USING THE CAR IF VACUUM PROBLEMS ARISE!!!

Do the new pumps for the 61x engines have a ball bearing style bearing or the updated style like the 60x pumps?
