Picked up my parts car today, the shop had cut off the back 15" of the car...
Here's a few pics of the diesel after it was pulled out.

The car has had some poor repair work in the past, lots of mud around the taillight areas, and some broken welds on the back panel.

The parts car was a virgin, so the shop is going to section in the parts car sheetmetal to make a sound repair.

Should be finished in a week or two, as I've emphasized that I'm in no rush, to use this job as fill work.

That looks great! I would love to have one of those machines. I have repaired so many cars that were damaged like that by stretching them between a couple trees with chains.

Agreed, and you will thoroughly love driving the car. I had it's twin a couple years ago. When I bought if from the lady she said it would get 30 MPG. It had a full-ish tank when I got it and had a couple hundred miles on the trip odo. When it got to 600 miles on the odo, I put in exactly 20 gallons of fuel to fill to the max. It was not hard to do the math. It is not quite like the '98 E300T I had, but it will scoot when asked to. Please do as others have said, the EGR delete is easy. It is well worth the effort.....Rich

I use the front bucket on the Kubota.

Since it is getting to be cooler weather around here I should be able to get my silver 95 E300 back together.

As have I.

I thought this car deserved a slightly higher level of care, and I'm glad the number came in where I needed it to be, since the previous repair work on this car is spectacularly bad. The LR quarter and rear panel were previously replaced and the spot welds were either not done or have broken apart. You can see on the pic of the RR fender where the seam is broken below the taillight. Lots of mud was used to shape the ends of the fenders.

Sectioning in the *new* metal will restore the shape with a minimal amount of filler.

Should see some progress by the end of the week when I stop by.

Looks good. I have a 240D that needs similar treatment, though not as bad. Really needs a rear quarter panel welded in. I am going to try to patch the bottom half below the chrome line in with a piece from a parts car....someday.

Fabulous. Just as a reference, I had to pay $2,800 for a respray of the lower cladding and front & rear bumpers. Seems the body shop there is a bit more reasonable. It's nice to see someone rescuing a deserving candidate. Here's hoping it brings you lots of enjoyment!

Of all the old Benzes I have, nothing drives quite like the E300d. I'd own ten of 'em if I could.

I've dealt with this shop for over twenty years, originally with Cecil, the owner who is an old time lead sled customizer, and more recently with his daughter who is now running the shop. I always pay in cash, and insist that the work be done on a *fill* basis, no rush. Great for me since I get indoor storage while they have it..... As a result, I get a nice discount on the work they do for me.

btw - not to sound like a repeat, but the air vent on the left side is also backwards - you can also see the sunroof cable guide clip too on the outside too.

how much did the body slice and trunk lid cost?

I already had a 94 E320 parts car that had a complete rear section, so the parts cost (trunk lid, taillights, bumper, etc.) had been amortized. Not sure of the final total yet, but I have a not to exceed number, $2500.

Wife and I just returned from a short (~1000 miles) trip in our '95 E300D. Drove up to Reno for the air races, then to the Oregon border for camping. Sea level to 7500 feet and back, averaged 31.5 MPG. The 90 liter (23.8 gallons) tank makes for wonderful range between fillups. A great car.

What is the most amount of miles you've been able to travel on a tank of gas?

23.8 miles X 31.5 mpg = 749.7 miles. That would be an incredible amount of miles on one tank of gas if you drove it to empty.
