I wouldn't wait too long to replace it. If it's already wobbling, think of the potential damage it could do flying apart. Replace it asap.

If it still wobbles when you are sure that the bolt is tight, the bearing is bad. it needs replacement.
If you are short on green right now, there are 2 options remove fan and just rely on the aux fans (some wiring needs to be done) get a used fan clutch with good bearing and fill it up with silicone fluid. Its not a precise science because you dont know how much it would need. But it would be better than replacing the radiator, hoses etc.

I'm looking at getting the upgraded 606 fan and clutch. Plus I did just pick up an 8 hour shift for Saturday, so that will help.
I'm reading the thread on the 606 upgrade and am not sure which year to get the fan clutch and blades from. plus the clutch only has a small amount of play in it when hot. This thread, probably the definitive thread on 60x fan clutch upgrade specifies to use the 11 blade fan and related clutch. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/162793-om603-fan-clutch-upgrade.html So, I guess I'll be ordering soon. The only brand I can find between my trusted online retailers is ACM, anyone have any experience with that brand? Last edited by TheDon; 08-09-2012 at 02:20 PM. |

IDK what year or model your OM603 is in. I have a '91 350SD with an '87 OM603 installed. I just installed the 11 blade plastic fan from a wrecked '98 E300, and ordered the new Sachs clutch from Pelican for the '98 application. Works a charm.

Sachs is the OE unit - very good quality - it slowly engages the fan, the BEHR ones act like switches. Never seen an ACM - but it looks like a Sachs clone - or maybe Sachs makes them for other brand names too. I have also seen a trucktek part that had a sachs sticker.

You don't have to get an 11-blade fan. Most folks get it because it exists. How many sellers claim,"R-134a conversion already done!" like they've done you a favor? How many years did your car not overheat with a 9-blade fan? Stick with the original fan and upgrade when funds allow. Maybe by then you'll have funds for a 2-piece shroud too

I'll hunt for the 2 piece shroud, my yard gets a bunch of german stuff in all the time. If thats the case, using my current fan blade, then I'll order the new clutch tomorrow (part # 6062000122 ) (goodbye money!) Last edited by TheDon; 08-09-2012 at 09:24 PM. |

PM me your address... if you have no funds, I can ship you a good clutch, for your original fan, and it'll be safe to drive with. the clutch is not new, it's used, but it has a good bearing.
also, be SURE it's not the water pump that is sloppy...

sent you a PM
When the engine is cold there is no play at all in the fan clutch but after driving there is play. Plus when I did pull the clutch and fan out the front of the clutch was covered in grime/dust. I also noticed when killing the engine via the stop lever the fan did not come to a dead stop even with the engine a little over 80. |
