om603 fan clutch question

Just put my fan back on and I am wondering about how much play there should be in it.

I put it back on with a ratcheting 8mm wrench and allen key and then held the pulley with a tool and used a 10mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar to tighten it more. It was very tight and I didnt think it budged.

But I am just scared it may not be on there. I wiggled it by one fin and it felt solid.

I might try and buy the super stubby 8mm 3/8 socket just for this purpose

Nevermind, it's loose as hell. I drove 1 mile to work and checked and I could wiggle the fan with one finger. Crap.

There was no loctite on the bolt. It's a pain in the rear to access that bolt with the stupid fan shroud in the way.

Any advise? I need to drive this thing ASAP. Looks like I'll be attempting to tighten it in the parking lot at work tonight.

You need a standard L shaped Allen key to tighten that bolt once its in the fan clutch bolt cavity, nice ample room. I use the allen, and an 8mm socket and extension on it, hold the belt on the w/p pulley with water pump pliers and tighten it snug - do not overtighten it or that bolt wont come out.

holding the belt is easy on my E300D as it does not have the separator plate for the air filter housing. You may need to contort your arm.

I did it with and allen key and spun it home and then thought I had it tight.

I have a craftsman Max axxess set that might be of use. It's such a tight spot.

The 2-piece shroud is your friend. It was about $75 a couple of years ago.

I saw an E320 at the yard last time I was there, I hope its there the next time I go so I can nab it. My cabrio had the two piece and it was such a brilliant idea.

When I removed the bolt there was no loctite on it, I just want to really make sure that is the case.

A gasser shroud won't work. The 60x fan is on the water pump pulley flange on the exhaust side of the engine. The shroud is offset way towards the exhaust side. Heck, a third of the fan doesn't cast a shadow on the radiator. The 10x fan is on it's own idler pulley smack in the center of the engine (the water pump is on the intake side). The 10x fan is driven by the smooth side of the belt so it spins CCW. Not that that matters to the shroud.

I'll have to check the FSM again but I don't recall a call for Loctite or even a killer torque spec. Snug with a foot long breaker bar has served me well.

Darn, the 300D I got my seats from had the radiator in the trunk but the shroud was long gone.

I just backed the bolt out and snugged it down the same way I did earlier and its as tight as possible without breaking anything.

My mercedes guru said that the fan cluch bearing is most likely showing its age. Looks like I'll be saving up for a new 606 fan clutch and fan. Next time I go to harbor freight I'll grab a mechanics stethoscope since mine has gone missing so I can figure out the damn clicking sound.

Are you sure the Gasser shroud won't work?

V8 shroud sounds more likely.

IIRC M103 and M104 fans are in the same location. [edit] V8 fans look to be offset like the 300D but I don't see 2-piece shrouds in the E420s on eBay at this moment.

lt1fire, the 90-91 350SD/Ls on eBay don't show a 2-piece shroud but my '91 300SE had a 2-piece shroud. In the case of the '87 300D, MB superseded the single piece shroud with a 2-piece shroud so that's all they sell now. Check the EPC.

The 2 piece shroud is on my list of things to get. Once a crossover is solid.
