only thing to do is pull the compressor, flush each and every line and component, then replace dryer, and put in the correct volume of oil back where it is supposed to be, evacuate the system, then weigh in the correct charge of R12.
if you are using R134, weigh in 60% of the R12 weight, and adjust charge to get best cooling... but do not exceed 80% of the R12 charge.
I know he used 8 oz. of PAG oil. Can I just extract like 4 oz. of PAG oil leaving 4 oz. in there as the recommended amount varies between 4-6 oz? Thanks for your input, vstech.

Why not take it back to the mechanic and have him fix it?

how exactly would you extract the oil?
there is no sump for it to reside in that you can drain...
if you know he used 8oz pag oil, do you also know he flushed the system completely and used a new dryer?

He said he certainly flushed the system. I gave him the new drier and Envirosafe to put in

Envirosafe? One uses much less of that than either R12 or R134a. It may be monstrously overcharged, and the high-pressure cutout switch is defective (or bypassed)?

Only 12 oz. of Envirosafe, a bit undercharged. Well I think there was a leak which led to the compressor stopping. The indy used the green and red seals and there was leaky PAG oil and refrigerant with the red seal on the underside of the compressor. I substituted the yellow seal for the red seal, put on the AC belt by getting it half on and touch starting the engine and it wrapped on. I vacuumed the system and recharged with 12 oz. Envirosahe. Getting 60 degrees at the center vent rigged open which was better than the 64 degree I was getting before. I may add a touch more tomorrow.

The indy first use the red and yellow seals and it leaked out after a week. Then I told him that he was suppose to use the green so the doofus use the green and red. When I research the boards, I found out that the green and yellow seals were to be used with the R4 compressor. So if you want it done right you either have to do it yourself or research the boards and tell the indy how to do their job. The R4 doesn't have instructions on what seals to use, it merely provides you with 3 alternatives for 2 seal points. I think he also used too much oil. What is wrong with this picture? $400 for labor which had to be redone twice? After the first redo, he wanted to change my 1/2 hr labor but I refused as he didn't do the job properly because it leaked. I decided to redo it myself rather than ask him to redo it after the last time. I won't be using him in the future but then again it may not be his fault as he said that he doesn't have time to search the boards to find out what is correct for these old cars. My regular indy was away and couldn't do the job that wifey wanted done immediately. Frustration abounds, arrggghhh.

... all it takes is decent eyeballs to know which seals to use... the wrong ones will not be level...
dufus indeed!

Part of the problem is that the compressors are often furnished with an unworkable combination of seals. The issue is further complicated by the fact that even the "correct" seals don't seal all that well, partly because the new style seal requires a pilot in order to work correctly. On most MB's, the manifold lacks a pilot on the suction side. Unlike the old o-ring seals, getting a totally leak-free connection is just about impossible.
