Front rotor to hub hex bolts: loctite or not?
One DIY I read says to use loctite on the rotor->hub hex bolts. Other says no loctite.
Unless there is a pressing reason not to do so, I would be inclined toward using blue loctite? Correct? Thx |
Did the old bolts have blue on them? IIRC they came from the factory with blue. I used blue when I changed rotors on my w123 when I had one.

I am getting ready to do the job, never having done so, and I am trying to cover some questions that arose when reading the DIYs.... |
Blue threadlocker on rotor bolts cannot possibly be a bad thing.
|
I won't use that stuff on anything. I want things to come apart and not fall apart but I haven't seen that happen yet in the 35 years I've worked on these old cars.

Blue is you want to remove it, eventually
Red if you want to hate yourself |

I never use it for brakes. I do at least 3 brake jobs a day.
I rely on clean threads and correct torque to make sure nothing falls off. |

Some cars don't even have them. |
The rotors from the benz factory comewith locktite so I use it on them too. Red.

I use the blue stuff.

Doesn't matter what color the loctite is. A little heat (500F) will make it soft as butter.
|
Subaru doesn't use thread locker on any of the brake components.

Every brake component I've removed has a blue thread locker on them. They apply the liquid and let it air dry before installing. I'm rebuilding the entire brake system on my '88 350 SE. That's the way they are going back together.

I back the blue. No harm, cheap, locks, seals the threads from corrosion, probably makes future work easier due to reduced corrosion.
It's been suggested to reduce torque by about 10 percent due to reduced friction on threads if used. |
