Well you could be further; you could be back in Europe!

In the picture it looks like you've got the IP over at a sharp angle - what's going on there then? Am I just imagining it?

Oh sorry - stop the clock!

I agree with Army. There is definitely money to be made if you can rebuild engines in a short amount of time.

Well, send me your sick and wounded.

Port that head while it's out!

Dose it make a difference on a diesel?
I did port some cast iron gasoline heads and machined them for larger valves about 20 years ago.

Engine looks nice, did you Cad plate the gold parts? also, how did you get the aluminum parts so clean??? I first noticed the upper pan in one of the early pictures. I have steamed cleaned with a hot water pressure washer and still stuff hangs in the crevases. almost like it is stained.

Nice Hobby Shop. :)

Advertisement, Yes if I wasn't that far away from everybody.

that's a nice and quick rebuild! what's the engine hanging from? regular bed sheet or kevlar? what kind of knot did you use at the hoist end?

1960mog 08-18-2012 01:22 PM

The engine is installed and running.

It's amazing what a difference some compression can make.

Most of the parts on this engine are cad plated, not all of the aluminum are beat blasted.
I just used the blasted alu parts that i had laying around.
The oil pan is not blasted, only pressure washed.

The engine in this pic is not hanging from anything, it's on the engine stand.
In a other pic you can see a one ton lifting sling attached to the engine.
I don't know what it is made of, but it's not Kevlar.
There is no knot at the hoist end. The sling is just in the hook of the engine hoist.

Awesome job! Glad to hear it is running. Army, where are you with that stopwatch? Don't tell me you are sleeping!

I think porting a stock engine would be a waste of time. This is a well engineered engine not some quick and dirty crap job engine with all sorts of compromises to save a nickel.;)

I don't know how he did his, but I use spray oven cleaner and or sodium hydroxide (lye), and rinse with water to clean grease off of metal. Be ready to oil the ferrous metals right away, they will rust. Be careful with lye, it is powerful stuff.

Falling asleep...

In my time zone you get these times=>

Clock started 08-16-2012, 10:53 PM

in post #19

Clock stopped prematurely in post 32 so ignore that

Clock stopped 08-18-2012, 2:11 AM

in post #33

Total time break down between the time stamps is

16th August = 1 hour 7 mins
17th August = 24 hours
18th August = 2 hours 11 mins

I reckon 12 hours of work on the 17th in post #27 the guy has to eat and so forth...

...but that's a guess as I'm not sure how the start time of 7:45 mentioned in post #27 corresponds with peach parts server time!

So my guess about 14 hours starting with a stripped down engine.

charmalu 08-18-2012 04:24 PM

I used some of the Dollar store Oven Cleaner one time and didn`t seem to do much. maybe I need to raise sights to a better quality product. :o

Yeah I know it is some caustic stuff. be sure to wear Saftey Glasses.
