300SDL Mould Number Location?
Is the mould number visible on the outside of the cylinder head and in an accessible place without removal of parts?
Is there a more certain way of identifying the cylinder mould number? |

Hi
The only # I can find on a 603 head is the part # above the second intake port. Hope that helps.

Another way to identify a #14 head, original to the 603.96, is that there is a clear line of sight, if you will, to the cylinder head bolts just ahead of each injector since they're on parallel axes*. Later castings have the injector at an angle obstructing access to said head bolts.
[edit] I mean they're parallel when viewed from the fender. They might not be parallel when viewed from the front of the car. Sixto 87 300D^2 Last edited by sixto; 08-11-2012 at 05:21 PM. |

Thanks to each of your for your assistance. The P/N I have, for what is supposed to be a #20 cylinder casting is: 603-010-96-20. However, this is just a guess on my part. The car I recently purchased had the trap oxidizer dealer removed, and a new turbo (I was told) but I would be pleased and of course less anxious to know that the engine is not fitted with a #14 cylinder head.

-96- is the part number for the assembled head (valve guides, valve seats, plugs, etc.). The casting number won't be on the service records, it'll be on the head itself as in the pictures above. It should be a #22 casting if it was done in the last 10 or even 15 years.
