Recycled oil is proving to work well in apps that it is suitable for. It's as good as any grp II oil out there...

The motor oil I see labeled as green says it's made with 50% recycled oil. Recycled paper is one thing but recycled oil?

SIXTO, I saw some recycled/reclaimed rerefined used engine oil at Walmart also. Done`t remember if it was a blend or not.

Rerefined used oil has been marketed for a long time, it`s nothing new. actually as I have read, oil doesn`t wear out, just gets contaminated. really don`t see why it couldn`t go back to the refineries and run through the system.

Cartrans uses rerefined oil for the whole fleet, that is every thing from cars to Roadgraders etc... and they have a huge fleet of equipment. so it must work ok.

For you in other states, Caltrans is the state agency that maintains the state highways. ODOT for Oregon, NDOT for Nevada etc... what ever Dot that is in your state.

EDIT:

I did some Google searching and found the Brand of oil the State uses. Firebird by Union 76.

Besides contaminated, it also gets cooked. I suppose there's a way to filter out oil that's been overheated.

My understanding of oil production is that at different temperatures, different viscosities (carbon chain lengths) of oil boil off at different temperatures. It is a distillation process. When oil is run in the crank case, it is exposed to high temperatures and stress thus breaking down the carbon chains into smaller molecules. It is feasible to re-distill used oil and pull out unbroken carbon chains. Soot and contaminants should not be a problem because the distillation process is designed to isolate carbon chains in a range much smaller and or larger than those. Similar process to distilling alcohol.

Would I use recycled oil? No. Why? because it is mixed with at least 50% new oil. Why would a perfect distillation process need to be mixed with 50% known good oil? Theoretically, the re-refined oil should be in spec with acceptable carbon chain length as new oil, right? Well, I'm not a petroleum engineer, so I can't say why you would want to mix a supposedly good product with another known good product; other than the possibility that the first product is inferior. Thus, I do not use recycled oil in my crankcase. I do recycle my oil, though. The 300SD seems to like a little taste of its own blood every once in a while. If I had a supply, I would run WMO in every tank.

Like I said, I'm just a guy with a cat avatar. I bet no one can figure out the history of the cat, though. I'd be shocked if anyone could even tell me his name!
