question on w126 door lock ('86 300sdl)

I read through a few threads using the search feature relating to door locks, but couldn't find anything specific...maybe someone can kindly direct me if I missed a thread relating to my question:

My driver's side door lock recently started acting up last week. I noticed the dust guard is no longer there (slides when key is introduced into the lock), It still locks the car easily, but unlocking involves a lot of back and forth with the key until it finally unlocks.

The drivers side door lock is not much better as the key barely goes in; however, it does work once the key is finally in. I want to be able to lock/unlock the car, without worrying about being stranded someplace.

Based on what I've read it seems like I should have no problem pulling out the lock cylinders on both sides. Once I have them out, is there a rebuild kit I can purchase from either Phil or the dealer to have them repaired by a locksmith, or do I just need to invest in a new lock cylinder set?

Thanks in advance!

Key

What is the condition of your key? If its worn, I would suggest ordering a brand new key (from the dealer) ---- Coda had this issue; new key resolved the issue; Coda had the dust cover slide intact. My current 87 Champagne is missing the slide on the drivers door.

Mmmm...the key seems fine and works well in the ignition, but now that you mention, I think the fact that the passenger lock is also acting strange could suggest the key is the issue. I'll dig up the spare and report back.

Thanks!

Have you tried the trunk lock? The truck lock should also be able to lock and unlock the whole car. The best bet is put in keyless entry. It is easily done for little money.

The keys material is made to wear out faster than the "plates" in the lock mechanism. I agree with Daw-Two as this is a common issue.

Thank you all for the useful help/info. I located my spare today and it turns out the locks work just fine with the newer key. So, I'll swap keys and just keep the older one as a spare now.

BTW, ah-kay, is there any particular key less entry system you've had luck with? I figure after this episode, I may as well invest in one.

Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Contact Chad and ask him which one he installed in Coda

I am in the process of making a 'turn-key' keyless remote system for the W124 and W126 cars. No cutting of wires, just plug in and go type of system. I need to get the parts, have it made, tested before I offer to the members. It will be a while as I am very busy with work and my DD.

If you are handy then just buy any keyless system that supports pneumatic control and install it yourself. eBay sells those for < $40.

I installed one of these systems (Home - Mercedes Benz Plug-In Keyless Entry Upgrade) about six years ago. It has worked well with the following issues.

1. Go to lock the doors and they will not lock. Cycle the unlock a couple of times and then the doors will lock.

2. Fobs are not as robust as I would like. I have re-soldered the switch on one, one of the signal lights on the fob no longer blinks, one the case over the buttons seems very thin like it is wearing out.

3. Because it works off the vacuum it is slow compared to electric locks.

I would do it again for the convenience.
