Odd wood between EGR and Valve cover

Please Look At The Attached Photo...

This is a picture of the engine (617.925) on my 1985 300 D-PLEASE NOTICE the piece of WOOD between what I beleive is the EGR and the Valve Cover. My best guess is this helps prevent the EGR from leaking or vibrating. My question is should I remove this? It looks like it (egr) has been leaking. Is there a gasket that I can buy that would go between the intake manifold and the valve body? Any body with any other idea why it might be there?

Thanks!

we prefer G rated thread titles in DD please.

It looks like that someone stuffed the wood there because the air cleaner housing is vibrating due to a failed bracket. Common failure. The EGR is bolted on, in a very solid manner, to the intake.

Remove the wood and I bet you the air cleaner is vibrating.

They may have put it there to stop the air cleaner from vibrating, it may have broken rubber mounts, or the rear ear may have broken off the support assembly.

Does the piece of wood go behind the air cleaner also? my guess it is wedged in there to keep the air cleaner from rattleing against the Valve Cover because of broken air cleaner mounts.

The EGR probably doesn`t work anyway, just remove it and make a block off plate. I bet if you remove it, the hole in the intake manifold is plugged tight with black crud. a mixture of soot and oil vapors.

i once had a bad case of morning wood in the mid-afternoon. true story.

when's the last time you changed your brake fluid? it appears a bit dark and nasty in the photo. must be changed every 2 years my friend, unless you want to rot your hydraulic brake system from the inside out.

When you remove the air cleaner assy. to replace the mounts and or bracket (the bracket is a PITA), be sure to inspect the air cleaner assy. carefully on the valve cover side. They can actually crack on that side and it is VERY hard to see. I had to have mine welded and I have seen 2 others with the same problem.

Where the wood is wedged in is likely where the crack would be.

Never use wood to keep your air filter from rattling. That's what old rubber exhaust hanger donuts are for.

What to use on the exhaust you ask? Simple......twist ties saved from your boxes of plastic bags.

More reasons why we hate the PO.

OK- Removed the wood and yes the air filter vibrates more but when I looked at a different MB before I purchased this one the air filter rocked as if the mount was broken. This doesn't rock and doesn't "feel" broken. a very firm push on the left side and it will move a little but not as if it is broken. anything in particular to check? I read about the donuts- where would those attach? THe donut I think of would resemble the donut used to hold the muffler on an 80's style VW rabbit. same type of thing?

Also I will attach a picture of the valve on the top of the valve cover. It appears to be leaking. can I replace the plastic connector with a hose clamp? is the leaking normal? what is the cause? I will take apart the air cleaner and inspect from the inside and report back..

I just purchased this vehicle and brake fluid, viton hoses, tank cleaning, atf/filter/gasket/oil (again) are all on the list...

Another thing I am going to try to attach a picture of the trim. Can I get the plastic connector between the trim and the sheet metal? I have no book yet and was wondering if there is a part number of if peach has them…

IN an Aside...My temp guage reads just below the 100 mark but thanks to this BAD A** website I checked the line at the pump with a Infared Temp AND GUESS WHAT???-78 degrees Celcius! I just laughed...

THANKS AGAIN...

That is definitely aftermarket plywood, not OEM Mercedes. But if it works, who cares? My PCV hose or whatever that is supposed to be called has a regular hose clamp, it should be fine.

Replace the hose with the upgraded one piece style from the 116 chassis 617.

Remove the airfilter cover and airfilter and make sure all of the bolts
Are holding it in place. If anything the sheet metal has failed on the bottom portion of the airfilter housing.

If not remove the bottom of the air filter housing and inspect the bracket for failure.

You can get those trim clips easily through fast lane. Call phil
