1986 300SDL question...
I am ordering a new downpipe back exhaust for my SDL. When purchased it had the trap removed and some hack job exhaust installed. Currently it has the factory downpipe with a gutted cat and a rotting out resonator along with muffler. I think I pulled this off an '87 I parted.
The EPC shows two part numbers for the resonator. 126 490 46 15 is the PN I believe I need as my car was originally equipped with the trap and was removed during the MB campaign and put the cat under the car. 126 490 47 15 shows for '86 Fed cars. Anyway, did '86 Federal vehicles come with a Trap Ox?

IIRC they did not. Doesn't Brian or shertex have a Federal '86? Caveat, though - MB redid the exhaust system so you can't attach non-cat downpipe to a for-cat rear section. The telling sign is the non-cat downpipe has a 3-bolt flange while the for-cat rear section has a 4-bolt flange. More than that, the flanges are not in the same location. If you're lucky, it might be minimal work to get the ends to meet.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I will go snap a pic of the DP on my '87 currently that came with the cat. I seem to think it had a three bolt DP.

This one looks like a 4-bolter to me - 300SDL exhaust front pipe/cut out converter
[edit] It's 3 bolts at the turbo. Sixto 87 300D |

Mine has three bolts at the cat flange.

shertex says the ex-Brian Carlton '86 SDL has no cat and a 3-bolt flange. Maybe that's what you should get. You can borrow a federal '86 VIN if necessary. Knowing MB though, they'd have moved the flange so you can't easily swap in a cat-less downpipe.

Did '87 Feds come with the cat under the car as well as the TrapOx?
I am trying to figure out what in the hell I have going on with my car.

No, only the trap. Cat was added as part of the recall.
