price??

Sorry, I figured after posting here that the owner of the car is asking too much? They are firm at $3500 for it. Even though I like the look of the vintage exterior, I figure I will not be a fan of the non turbo 240D motor.

Maybe I need to start looking at 300D, I saw a forum members 300SD on here for $1800 that needs paint, but that might be a good "starter" diesel?

I figure for $3500 a Mercedes diesel should be in good condition and shape?

For a few thousand more we are into other cars and options....TDI or newer mercedes diesel right?

Sorry to be all over the place, but I am really weighting my options, I do like the "big body" 1995 era S class diesel also and have seen those for $4-6K.

Just relability will have to be weighted out as the diesel mercedes gets newer and more prone to issues right?

If you guys know anyone in PHX or maybe even southern cali that has a good condition diesel mercedes please let them know I am in the market for a good daily driver with working AC. AC is a must in phx when it is 115 degrees outside. I have to be realistic, I cannot drive a car without A/C and I dont want a summer paperweight in the garage

Thanks for the help guys! I love this forum, compared to the TDI forum(other option) seems like the VW is an econo-box car with huge repair bills. Sort of counter acts the diesel/fuel savings in my book.

I rather spend less on an older mercedes diesel....

3. What do you guys think about the 300CD???1978 2 door?

Coups are great, but I think you would have a tough time getting parts in AZ. I live in Los Angeles, and they are rare around here.

1986 190D???

What are your thoughts on a 1986 190D? Anything I should be concerned with on these diesel mercedes? Any major issues to look for? The one I am looking at has 250k miles on it.

Thanks, Floyd

If it has the 2.2 and automatic, it will be very under powered. The 5 speed would be the best choice. If it is a 2.5, an automatic is fine. I had a 2.2 5 speed, and it was a great little car. A 190D would be a big step up from the 115 (240D) you were looking at.

A US spec '86 will be a 2.5. Some early 2.5s experienced premature wear of the timing chain and cam sprocket. Nothing replacing the chain and sprocket doesn't fix.

The 240D is a gokart - I'd take the 79 300SD over the 240D. Has real nice steering. Downside is possible servo issues and rear seat horse hair degradation.
