Broken plastic piece in door lock?

Hey guys,

So I remember a while back I was messing with the lock on my door and I remember hearing a crack and finding that the key didn't lock/unlock the door anymore. I remember looking inside the door and seeing a little plastic tube piece that seemed to join the key mechanism to the actual lock mechanism. This is what had broken.

Is anyone familiar with this part? I have been searching around and can find no mention of it. Does anyone know how to replace it? Is it super involved/complex or can it be done fairly simply?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The part he's talking about is part of #5 in the pic below. It's a conical shaped plastic part that the shaft from the door handle sticks into and actuall turns the lock mechanism when you turn the key. In the later models 123's this part was plastic. In the older models it's metal. My 82 wagon had the plastic part and it broke on me. The only place I could find a replacement was the junkyard. You have to buy the whole lock mechanism to get the one plastic part.

The second photo is the part he's talking about. I'm not sure that the pictured mechanism is from a 123 but the part looks the same.

I found the metal piece in a junk yard lock assembly. I have had a friend in the 3d printing business holding the part until he had some spare time to produce a "mock up" for me :). I received the prototype this evening and have put it back into an assembly I had removed it from. Next step is to reinstall the complete unit into a car and see if it holds up.

Not sure yet if these will be made available for sale. I want to see what is the market is for these as I believe the only other way to get the part is to buy a used lock assembly as the new parts are no longer available....NLA. I also want to find out what would be involved with bringing these to market.

I mainly created these out of necessity and to see how well the 3d printing process worked out. A prototype on several fronts and purposes.

I don't know if the lock actuator socket was ever availible separately and believe it only comes with the door-latch.
On my '84 Euro TD, the passenger side plastic lock actuator-socket broke. I installed a latch, with the metal actuator socket, from an '81 model.
Note that the metal and plastic versions are slightly different and I had to grind down the two little nubs on the extension-shaft off my '84 door-handle to fit into the metal socket, but it works perfectly now.

Happy Motoring, Mark

This is the first real potential use I have seen for 3D printing.

That makes two of us!

... if you're not interested in selling the part, perhaps you could make the 3d CAD file available? I have a buddy with a 3d printer locally in SD.

super cool to refab this, and super lame of benz to make a failing plastic piece part of a big assembly.

Hey sorry to necro this post but I've run into the same problem and I'm wondering where I can find a replacement part. It's super hit or miss to find a later year w123 at the picknpulls around here and I'm not seeing anything on ebay or anywhere else. Did you ever upload the designs for that plastic piece?

Thanks!

what part of the country are you?

I pick body parts from gas car, that are in the same year as my car(1987)

The gas car have usually lower milage than diesel,

In the pick n pull, ( the nice one's in N. california) that can match the locks,

good luck,

I do need the part too
