I was in Wisconsin last week and was surprised to see diesel lower than regular gas.

Just the opposite here in Georgia, its Diesel higher than even premium, ... Go figure.

Its about AU $ 1.53 / ltr here in Australia. They basically charge what ever they can get away with.

I like to use FlyingJ/Pilot as kind of a quick and dirty benchmark. Here are their prices today for fuel in different parts of the country, selected at random. Quite a variety...

The only thing I miss about living in Mississippi was the cheaper Diesel. It is about $.50 more per gallon here or $3.99.

Since I started paying attention to diesel prices I noticed wide variations in the same area. One station will be $4.19, drive a mile down the road and its $4.59. Gas buddy is completely useless for diesel prices since they don't get updated very often and sometimes they just straight lie about it. I have a W124 V8 fuel tank on my shopping list for ultimate range.

Whats the capacity on the stock 124 diesel tank vs the V8? I can't recall off hand.

The 124 500E/E500 had the big fuel tank. I was seriously looking at them in the late 90s, but dropped the idea because the large tank reduced trunk capacity more than I could live with.

A quick Google shows the 400E/E420 using the smaller 18.5 gallon tank.

To make the list more accurate, run the older numbers through www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm to normalize the dollars to today.

In fact, to those that long for the good old days, look at what things cost back then and normalize to today.

Many are forgetting that modern cars are way more efficient and need less repairs than in days gone by. Total cost per mile is what one should really be tracking.

Yeah, I came across a curious site in Lee Vining California!!!

Diesel cheaper than gasoline, but the price was still near $5 a gallon.

But the price arrangement was enough to bust out the 'ol camera!

If it makes anybody feel better, gasoline in Hawaii (big island) was around $4.40 and diesel was a dollar more at every station.

I stand corrected. Somehow I got it into my head that all the V8s had the larger fuel tank. I was wrong.

Has anybody tried fitting the S124 tank into a sedan to free up more trunk space?

It hit $5.00/gallon in the summer of 2005 in Fresno.

At the time, I could buy VVO from Costco for about $2.85/gallon and we ran the 300SD on nothing else for 6 months, until the price of VVO started going up.

I fueled earlier this week in Palm Springs for $4.49/gallon...

The Shell station in Tyson's Corner VA is pricing diesel the same at 87 octane. I must note that the Mercedes and VW dealer are close by, so perhaps that is where they take their diesel cars and the pricing is the incentive. Lucky me, I work close by and have the right car to get in on this.

The Prius owners in my company were a little jealous to find about this pricing and starting eyeing some newer VW diesel cars.
