flex plate removal?
Any helpful tips for removal of the flex plate after dropping the tranny as the one I'm messing with ('87 190dt) isn't coming off?

I hard a very hard time getting mine off the other day. I ended up having to cut the bolts to get it off.

Can you get an impact wrench in there? How are you holding the flywheel?

Dropped the auto tranny which was really hard since I didn't unbolt the torque converter 1st (not the smartest way). Unbolted and removed torque converter. Used the impact and removed the 8 flexplate bolts. Can't see anything holding the flexplate on except a tight fit on the crank shaft. Pried with a couple of screw drivers and hit it lightly with a hammer with no luck.
I've removed one from an OM617 and it wasn't nearly this stuck. Any suggestions?

Douse the area with penetrating fluid then smack the flange (the ring of bolt holes) with a hammer. Don't smack the flex plate where there isn't crankshaft flange behind it. Buffer the hammer with a thin sheet of wood or cardboard to start but I'd hit directly if it's really stubborn. Worst case is you damage a relatively inexpensive flex plate.
If there aren't any dowels, try hitting a flex plate wing to spin it loose. Also try heat but make sure you don't start a fire if there's oil in the area. Sixto 87 300D |

Thanks, will try some penetrating oil and hit it a bit harder.
OK, flexplate is now off....sure is a tight fit!
