Tierods: When to replace?

So I've been chasing down a bit of a shudder/shake in the front end at around 50mph when not turning and I've convinced myself that it isn't wheel balance (It doesn't feel like an unbalanced wheel) so now I'm looking for other options. So now I'm wondering about tie-rods.
  • What are the symptoms of worn tie-rods possibly with some play?
  • What's the average service life for a tie-rod?
  • Any other thoughts on my shaking?
Thanks!

when they're loose!

take the front tire with your left and right hands at 9 and 3 oclock and twist. if there is play they are loose most likely. on a 123 they tend to go around 100k.
