I am unaware of any reason the 99 would require a special battery...

both cars are specced for the H8 battery size, the group 93 which sits nicely in the W124 tray is a bit taller I believe - and the W210 holds its battery under the rear seat (Ive only seen it on a euro E220 CDI) - never seen a US spec W210 battery place or holder.

Batteries

Doesn't the W210 battery sit under the passenger seat? It does in my '96, not sure of the '99. Although a regular lead-acid battery will certainly fit and work, an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery is recommended because the battery is in the passenger compartment. Granted, such things are expensive (about $200) and you have two "regular" batteries available for free. If you promise never to roll the '99, you may put a wet battery in it.

It needs to be vented. Ought to be a grommet in the floor pan right next to the batt.

The battery is under the rear seat in the most inconvenient place possible... the battery crapped out after me not running the car for awhile and I have these other batteries. I diddnt think it was a specialty battery but i diddnt want to go through the hassle of yanking the battery out to find out the ones I have wouldnt work. so at some point in the near future I'll post a topic if there is extreme interest on how to replace a battery in this thing. It's straight forward. just sucks... makes me wonder how you'd jump start this thing.

Most modern cars with a hidden battery have a set of terminals for jumping under the hood

the 210 CDI I saw had the same H8 battery Bosch brand under the seat and it was wet cell, it was vented by a tube in the floor. And to jumpstart it there was a giant nut with a bright red cover in the engine room. That was positive lug, the negative was just anything.

I saw it being jump started by a strange set of cables, they had a round socket type clamp with a locking disconnect - this according to the mechanic's tow that was starting the car was to give max juice - as jump cable tooth clamps do not have enough surface area to transfer the required amps.
