Check your voltage regulators....

Check your voltage regulator....

Takes 10 minutes to do it, but please check it, especially with winter coming. My battery was charging at around 13-13.5 volts, and I had no issue, but I decided to check my regulator just the same. When I pulled it out, the carbon stacks were about a 1/4" tall....if that!!

It may have been the original regulator for all I know, but I do know I was dangerously close to having it go. It was just slap worn out.

Granted since the 83 does not have computer controls the car would have stayed running, but if it was night time or I was a ways from home, it only would have been a matter of time before the headlights, wipers, brake lights, anything electrical quit working as the battery drained.

So please, do yourself a favor and check your regulator. It only takes few minutes and you might be surprised at what you find!!

One step further

Great suggestion! While you're at it, plan ahead, buy a replacement new regulator (they're not that expensive) and install it. Put the old regulator in the new box and stick it in a corner of the spare tire well. This gives you:
a) experience in changing the regulator on your terms (clean, dry, no pressure) rather than in the middle of nowhere while the family waits in the rain;
b) a known good regulator (the one you removed) as a spare;
c) an opportunity to "get to know" the new regulator, make sure it's the right one and not defective. Out in the middle of nowhere is no time to discover the kid at the auto parts store grabbed the wrong box.
