I won. finally got the steering box off the 280E. tried the 2 hammer trick on the tie rods and they wouldn`t pop off. started looking for a tie rod remover at O`Rileys, Auto Zone, santa Cruz auto parts (now carquest) and Mid county auto. nothing, how do people seperate the w/o screwing up the boots with a Pickle Fork?
So swung by Harbor Frieght (HF) and they had one . US General 3/4" forged ball joint seperator item 99849. $19.99 now on sale for $16. 3/4" Forged Ball Point Joint Separator Dang things works great. HF site is strange, searched on the item#, searched tie rod seperator then ball joint seperator and only thing they show is a Pickle fork. then put in US General and it came up. weard. Anyway finally got the steering box out, but man those 280E engines fill up the eng bay, only one small area from under the car you have accessability to the HYD lines, and I lucked out the bolt for the coupler was pointing straight down. the steering was locked, would have been a problem getting to it if pointing up. The Diesels sure take up way less room and easier to work on. Charlie
