Yeah, I checked the chain stretch too.... Came out to about 3 degrees total. I did it be the 2mm Valve lift method as well as lining up the marks on the cam and tower.

PO swore the chain had never been replaced but had a stack of service records for almost the entire life of the car. I have a hard time believing that after 255,000 miles, the original chain only has 3 degrees of stretch!

There's a link about checking timing chain stretch somewhere on the site, yes?

That's a new one on me.

odd isn't it? but when researching an MB diesel, mileage is rarely even a concern... it's all about maintenance, and condition to us.
pictures?

Here is the link for checking timing chain stretch. It is best to do it at the same time you are adjusting the valves. BTW, any time you have the valve cover off, ALWAYS replace the valve cover gasket!

UGH!

~~So I hit the sunroof button like a moron and now I can't get it to close. The white nut that is supposed to be on the crank is cracked on the top and stripped on the bottom.~~

~~How do I do this without the special part?~~

How to close the sunroof manually without a special nut because yours is broken:

Get a 17mm deep socket (or deep-ish socket). Loosen (counterclockwise) the outer nut. Then loosen (again counterclockwise) the inner nut--but since it's really just a shaft with two flat sizes, you'll have to use a wrench or something. It's small.
Tighten the outer nut when you're done.

Ta da! Closed roof.

Thanks!

M

If the issue is just dirty tracks and/or worn sliders hanging up the roof when closing, you should be able to close it by pushing forward on the roof as you press the switch. As long as the motor is getting power and will move, this should give enough of a boost to the motor to close the roof.

If you tried that and it did not work, the switch may be dirty on the return side. I have had to replace that switch on several cars, sometimes with notice of impending failure, once with none. (If you are careful and have the patience of the almighty - I am disqualified on both counts - you can disassemble those switches and clean them, but it's a really tricky procedure.)

BTW when I say dirty tracks: one of the most common causes of that is the use of something other than the specialized Mercedes sunroof lubricant to grease the tracks. The Mercedes stuff doesn't attract dust, dirt and general grime.

Pics! Where are our pics?

Tomorrow I hope. I was all gussied up today (I'm a teacher and wear bowties and other lovely dress up clothes at work) but there wasn't anyone around to take a picture. So I GUESS I'll just have to take a picture of Jesse Owens (the car) instead.

If the sunroof motor runs backward but not forward I would check the switch, look in the mega long post I did last night for the schematic.

Sweet. Thank you--I suppose the first "real thing" I need to do is check those valves and that chain clearance. What sort of parts do I need for that? o.O

OH WAIT

Just remembered. When I turn off the car it chunks. It doesn't "diesel" as in continue running for a bit but it's like everything spins for a fraction of a second after I turn the car off and comes to an abrupt halt. What could this be and how much tearing apart of the car am I going to have to do tomorrow?

Relax. It's a 30-year-diesel Mercedes. Don't get the post-purchase jumpies on us....

Remember what you are dealing with. There is no spark to cut off and the injectors fire on fuel pressure, not electrical impulses from a computer module. Shutoff is done by a vacuum-controlled fuel cutoff valve that moves a lever inside the injection pump. All this is mechanical, as in things have to move and parts in motion have to come to a stop, so this isn't a process done in nanoseconds.

If you mean it seems a bit slow to shut down, in relation to when the key is turned to the off position, it is possible that you may have a vacuum leak or the shutoff valve might be on the way out.

However, I would think that the inspection would have identified that, if it's a real issue.

Good engine mounts will buffer the engine's last gasp. Some models have shock absorbers to help the mounts, later models have damping fluid in the mounts. If the engine rocks enough to 'chunk,' it might be time for new mounts.

That's a very nice looking 240.

By the way, if you don't want to purchase those expensive wrenches, i can rent you my set for a small fee. I'll even send the correct feeler gauges. After that, all you need is a valve cover. PM me if you are interested.
