Air the lines where? Fuel lines...? I don't think that it is a problem with the engine itself, but I'm not ruling anything out as of yet.

Until further info, I'm going to be replacing vacuum lines... I'll be back in a bit.

Let the engine run and fully warm up. That will ensure the lines are free of air.

Stalling in gear????

I am not sure about.....

So far so good... Sat and revved it like previously stated. Got it up to operating temp, tested it again. It engages without stalling now. Didn't take it out for much testing, back and forth a couple of times in front of the neighbor's house.

Reverse takes a little to engage, but I was just happy for it not to die.

It seems to like to jump off the line when the brake is let off, this normal?

It's still idling outside, more tests to be done after lunch.

Thanks for the input guys!

Took it out for a test drive at higher speeds. It shifted rough at first but did pretty well all things considering until it gave up the ghost. Now it won't go into gear at all. Nothing. I'm at a loss... Waiting for the wrecker now out on a county road.

Oh that stinks,
I have been following your thread with interest and thought you had it made. Good luck with sorting out your transmission issue

I had thought so too. Or at least I was hoping that I had. Back alternate plan Q. The cars back at the house now. Going to swap out the transmission filter, drain the fluid and put new fluid, say a couple prayers and cross my fingers.

Good thread; keep it up. We are all interested. I thought the problem with it stalling in gear unless it was revved up might be valve adjustment. My 81 SD would stall unless I revved it up; so I had to back out of the garage at pretty high speed; then keep it revved while I shifted to drive or else it would die. Got the valves adjusted and that problem went away.

Might not be your problem.

Alright guys, the votes are in... Death.

Drained tranny/swapped out the filter/refilled, tried to get it to do anything, but no transmission action. The old fluid was bad burned, smelled like it was roasted. Also, as I checked the fluid from the old filter, it was full of shiny stuff. Looks like I had been panning for gold in there.

Not quite ready to admit defeat, anybody have a 722.3xx laying around near Corpus Christi, TX?

My VW IDI diesel owners manual states that in winter you can use up to 25% gasoline in it during cold weather to prevent gelling. I have never done it.

It is fun to see the attendant bolt out when they see you start to fill the tank with diesel.

As was mentioned earlier by Doktor Bert, sounds kind of like a torque converter issue. I'm no expert, but the TC is the only thing I can think of that would stall the car only while in gear.

Pgringo - San Antonio is a pretty short drive in Texas miles. If you remember the place I'd appreciate it. They seem to have a good number of things there?

LoosBenz - Any ideas jn why none of the gewars what to engage? It acts like everything after park is just neutral.

My guess would be that something in the TC was binding building up heat, producing the shavings you are seeing (would explain the noise, as well) and ultimately failing. Losing the TC in an automatic is like losing the clutch in a manual- you will have no gears. Did it take the transmission with it? Your description of the contents of the pan certainly doesn't inspire much hope. No way to know (that I know of) without pulling it all out, unfortunately.

Sounds like you had a failure of sorts. I have seen the input twist out of the forward clutch drum on very high mileage and/or badly abused 722.3's....

i've never stopped in, but a euro specialist mechanic friend uses them for non parts store replacement parts.

have you tried "junkyard row" down there in corpus, out on the northwest side(i think)? (i'm a corpus native)

do you speak spanish? it'll get you a lot farther with finding parts local to corpus.
