So you are the one that got that car before I got down there! I was supposed to go get it last Saturday; the owner sent me an Email and said it had been sold.

Seriously, good luck with it.

So, the question is: Which one of you two was the lucky one

As I said, good luck.

I had asked questions about this car in this forum in preparation for my decision. I sincerely hope the new owner is successful.

Huh... She just told me that there was someone in Houston "interested". But thanks for the well wishes.

Yeah, I saw that thread as I was looking for more specific information on what would need to be done after I picked it up.

As far as the car goes, right now things are on hold until the starter comes out. Double checked all the connections on it and made sure the battery was fully charged, still nothing when the key is turned.

Since it looks like I will be needing a new one, is it possible to put in one of the older/stronger style starters that was talked about earlier?

Before you yank the starter you may want to double check that it is not in gear or something simple like that. I did that once while playing with the ashtray and it took me a while to realize I had bumped it out of park. Doh!

Also, you could try bypassing the key altogether and putting power directly to the solenoid to see if the starter is ok. That would tell you it is a wiring problem and not the starter.

Hmmm...... Haven't checked to make sure it isn't in gear.... I guess its possible. I forgot about manually jumping the starter! When I get some free time I'll see if it's something easy like that.

I'll do some sleuthing, maybe I can turn up something that wont cost me an arm and a leg.

Yeah, the plastic reduction in these will just denigrate. Somewhere I have pics of mine. I'll see if I can locate them. Didn't realize metal assemblies were available. I bought mine from a local shop here for 15-20 bucks.

Excessive cranking (aka heat buildup) on one of those will burn it up alot quicker than a 617 starter.
Another reason why the 617 is king!

I have always understood that WD40 used as starting fluid with a diesel is a huge no-no?

it is a substitute for ordinary fuel and can be used to start when the fuel pump has lost prime. It will not help start in cold weather. Actual Ether starting fluid can be fatal to a high compression diesel.

No go guys. As I feared, the starter was fried. Now that my pockets are a good bit lighter, the new starter should be here Tuesday morning. Hopefully by next week I'll have all the gas out of the engine if nothing else decides to grenade.
