207d camper, more power *wanted*
hey guys,
i have a 207d with a om616 motor and the 5 speed , (well really its a 4 speed with a super low crawler gear) pic of the tank ![]() as you can see, shifting that with a 2.4l naturally aspirated diesel is a very slow process, ive read about turbo upgrades, and even contacted stt emtec, but they no longer sell the kits, (all they seem to supply is kits for mitzi pajeros, that were already turbo'd wtf! ) seen a thread where someone installed 617 bits (less a cylinder) but even finding 617 turbo bits is proving futile, ive even heard a om617 motor will bolt straight up to the 5 speed gear box, which i'd consider if it was a tubo motor , although i don't even have 60000miles on the 616 motor yet is there a *how to* guide with pics on installing a turbo anywhere, can you use or modify the stock 616 intake and exhaust manifolds? many thanks |

Hi, I parted one out a few yrs ago and the cross cradle had a spot for moving the DS motor cushion forward to install a 617. there was a thread about a month back with a hymer 309d rv--the bigger bus body with a turbo 617 and an automatic. a 617 would bolt right in and your truck already has the special 33 lb flywheel--a G-wagon flywheel to go on a 617. if you are not a speed demon you could settle for 5 cyls naturally asperated--just find a rusty old heap and yank the motor--and swap in a long runner 115 5 cyl intake at the same time--and its dry aircleaner can too. If you were in the states you could (maybe) find an auxillary transmission -browneee-- that you put in the driveline that wold give you OD as well as low for each gear forward or reverse, they are tough to find nowdays, but they make small engines--the little engine that could!
if you try to mod your 616 it will most likely cut the life --especially hauling this bulk around the guys that do it take a 617 turbo exhaust and lobb off the last runner and weld it up with a nickel welding rod. Your special long runner 616 intake is a redesigned om621 intake with the inlet at the front end--and has a throttle flap if i remember correctly--you would just remove that and run the air straight in. X2 on panZZers comments.
I would put a 5 cylinder in before I turbo the 240. Depending on the year of your 240 it has 65 or 72 HP. If it is a 65 HP, You can pep it up a little with the cam from a later 616. If you using a 617 get one that is 1980 or later.

hey guys cheers for the speedy responses,
sounds like the na 5 cylinder is the way forward, ill keep my eyes open for one, im not too worried about engine life, parts are fairly plentyful in the uk, even buying a whole second hand car costs next to nothing, mine is a 84, but bugger if i know if its the higher hp model |

The sedans had 72 HP from 1980 on.
So your 207 should too.

Just find an engine and go to town. It should be possible to sell your OM 616 also. Hell, i might buy it.

I've owned a 307d and a 409d. One with the 616 5 spd and one with the 617 5 spd. The difference between them is not worth the effort to swap the engine in my opinion. You will run into clearance problems with a turbo 617. It won't fit without cutting the driver's side floor if it's right hand drive. I'm pretty sure the van engines use a completely different intake manifold than was ever installed on a car so you'd need a 617 van intake even to install a 617NA. The other issue will be the final drive ratio. You won't improve the top speed without a differential change. Not sure if the Indian company that continued to build the vans after MB stopped making them ever turbo'd the 616 in the vans. They definitely turbo'd the 616 in their version of the G wagon. If you wanted to turbo a 616. I'd look to India for the parts or even a complete engine.

eurocarparts.co.uk could get you a throwout bearing. MB USA never had parts listings for the van, at least I was told that. The only dealer with the microfiche for the parts on these vans was Europa--the G Wagon dealer-- in Santa Fe.

The engine in this model might be a bolt in swap:
*: Force Motors LTD. Not sure what the engine is. Not a 616 I think.

I'm not very familiar with the 115 intake. The intake went upwards from the head, curved towards the valve cover and was open for the air filter hose at the very front of the engine on my vans. Is that the way the 115 works?

That's different than the intakes on my 307d and 409d. The opening for the air filter tube faced directly forward rather than making that 90 degree turn.
