Is it true that W123 turbo oil filter tower won't fit to W126 chassis?

Posting this problem here thinking that perhaps somebody could verify that this is for real and that I am not just overlooking something and being stupid.

I’m doing a motorswap on a W126 turbodiesel car and ended up using the oil filter tower from a W123 OM617 turbo motor (I have a “thingie” that converts the oil P to electric signal for the W126 chassis).

All is fine, except that I am discovering that the W123 oil filter tower is too wide to fit next to the W126 steering box and hence the driver’s side motor mount is not quite lining up properly. Don’t like this! Been trying to shave off the tower but it seems to be going nowhere partially as there’s not whole lot of room to work with. Don’t really want to pull the motor back out but might have to. Also using the original W126 oil filter tower is not an option as it is pretty much trashed.

Any ideas? I’ve got the tail of the motor installed correctly (tranny mount) and am using the original W126 OM617 motor mounts…

The two canisters are not compatible. Sorry.

Definitely true that there is a significant difference. It's what allowed me to put a 617 into a 107 and have clearance to the steering box.

You can see the difference in this post 380SL Diesel Conversion Project

OK, that link pretty much settles it Thanks!
I managed to find the original SD's oil canister in the messy garage and I think I can make it work again. Sure is quite a bit slimmer than the W123 style one.

Yep, you got that right - I am quite certain that the closest Pick'n'pull yard with a pre-86 SD on it lies on the U.S. East cost. For one thing, there are only a handful of OM617 SDs here in Finland (If I had to put a number on it, I'd say 10) and the situation is similar elsewhere in Europe, I imagine. But luckily there is this forum as well as ebay thru which to obtain SD-specific parts (as the stealership is often not an option for me).

PS. On the lower portion of the oil canister there are spring loaded black plastic spindles - anybody know what those are there for? Something to do with evening out the oil flow...or...? There's total of two spindles and on mine, one of them has couple of broken wings. Didn't look into this for very much yet, but can those spindles be changed out easily?

The plastic parts are actually valves.
The upper one is a check valve, that keeps oil from draining out of the filter can when the engine is not running.
The lower one is a over pressure relieve valve, that opens when the oil filter gets clogged up, and allows oil to by pass the filter.
The wings guide the valve as it moves.

Maybe we can trade 617.951 oil filter housings for Myna pumps with 7mm elements

Isn't there a thread in which someone describes a remote oil filter setup for a 617 into a 115?

1960mog: Thanks a lot for clarifying that issue - makes sense now!

sixto: How many filter housings do you think I need But seriously, if there's something that I can do to help out with regards to getting a pump done at Mynadiesel, let me know.

Raised the motor up enough to get the W123 turbo filter housing off the engine, and will be installing the W126 canister next, as that's what I am going with for now. Then "a few" more things and she'll be on the road again...

Thanks for the responses!

I wonder if the valves inside the canisters could be swapped between the 2?

I rigged up one on my conversion (107 not 115) before I learned about the SD filter housing. Made life immensely simpler! I've still got the remote mount bits if someone is interested.
